After last weeks TV show, we thought the Santander account was for us, out relatives have one as well. So we applied online.

Email came in today...refused!

To say I was stunned is an understatement.

Us. House c £750k, no mortgage, ever. Income c £65k pa. Outgoings maybe £1k per month. Electricity/Sky tv/council tax/telephones and thats about it.
Lived here 12 years, never been bankrupted or anything like that, 1 bank account, 1 credit card paid off in full...always. No overdraft credit, nothing.
A Halifax Clarity for travelling.
£20k + in the bank, always.
Thats it. Electoral role, tick.

So after the refusal went online did a quick free CCheck, came in at 650.....OK i guess but wondered why on the low side.

Maybe you don’t utilise enough credit for them.

Anyway you’ve saved yourself £3 a month.

No idea why you were refused but IMHO.
Santander are Sh**e
they contacted me to ask for proof of ID and wanted passports scanned and sent.

This after 5 mortages spanning 33years, credit cards with them (no debt) mortgages all settled

Income paid in for over 30years
I had approx 200k in saving accounts etc after selling a house.

they stood firm (out of the blue)

So F them I took all the monies out leaving 1p in accounts and after 6 months or so I recieved a cheque for the balances remaining and was told they had closed my accounts.

They offer better perks/etc than my Natwest account and £4k per applicant at 6% AER.

So I thought, why not. Will be popping into my local Santander tomorrow to grill the poor sucker I/C

Maybe your risk profile doesn't match up to what they are seeking.

Bit like those lumpy renewal insurance quotes, the insurer simply don't want your business/ risk profile. No point getting stress over it, apply with another institution if you really wish to move account.

Exactly this. They have no idea what the OP is like as a borrower.

Dodged a bullet.

Santander locked my account for no valid reason and it was hell getting my money back.

Wouldn’t touch them with the longest pole possible.

From what you've said and based on experience, it'll be some sort of anomaly on the application. The address format is quite a typical one. It would be very unusual to be declined on a current account based on the information you've provided.

Santander - dead to me.

My mum walked into a branch to open a bond that was clearly listed as 'open in branch'.

They handed her an iPad and told her to do it online. She's almost 90.

Rubbish service.

You would not believe how pleased I was to read this.
I am financialy the sort of person that the chancellor thinks has very broad shoulders. Like you tick all the boxes possibly with the exception of not using enough finance, how dare I pay cash for a Bentayga in March.
Same as you "computer says no"
Started off amused then indignant then thought am I bovered.

Yep same here. I have a very low credit limit with them. Can't make best use of the 1% cashback to the limit of £15 per month because my credit limit is so low.

Barclays give me Premier banking. MBNA increases my credit limit to way over £10k and increases it automatically.

However I can't get a slight increase in my Santander edge credit card. They want to see rental income contracts, past tax statements, pension agreements, proof of pension income, all my savings accounts and investment accounts. All just to get a £1k credit limit increase.

I told them to forget it.

Hmm no I don’t agree with the above comments either. I had no mortgage or credit cards or even a phone contract and was able to open a credit card with HSBC.

Who did you use for the credit check? I think I have experian and my score was 999 even when I have no open credit accounts.

It might be something amiss with your address, fraud even. You should explore this further with the credit agency as 650 is very low.

This is from Barclaycards website.

Here are some of the factors that can harm your credit score:

a history of late or missed payments
going over your credit limit
defaulting on credit agreements
bankruptcies, insolvencies and County Court Judgements (CCJs) on your credit history
making too many credit applications in a short space of time
joint accounts with someone with a bad credit record
frequently withdrawing cash from your credit card
errors or fraudulent activity on your credit report that’s not been detected
not being on the electoral roll
moving house too often.

I am none of those. feckin weird

£750k house and no mortgage ever - inheritance or drug dealer? tongue out

As others have said, it'll be the lack of credit history. Always better to have a couple of accounts and some history of using and paying off a credit card. I use one for daily spending and direct debit the payment at the end of the month. It may also be that they just don't want you as a customer if they deem you'll cost them money because you don't have any use for any of the products they sell...

Ever heard of inheritance??? Its when someone dies and you get a gift of some sort.

Credit history...or lack of it. I have a "couple of accounts" And always "pay off a credit card"..I have 2.

So thats out.

It might just be latter part of you post!

I just did a quick google up and as each credit agency scores differently, transunions range for “excellent” is 628-710.

So basically that agency is saying you have a top tier score, which means to me it has something specific to do with Santander profiling beyond just the credit score.
