Prominent Facial Tattoos
Discussion
Was at my step grandson's football team award cermony last night.
Poor wee granddaughter was a bit left out.
To entertain her I let the facepainter have a go on me.
Got home shattered and as I'd showered and brushed teeth before we went out I went straight to bed.
Woke up this morning and hadn't time to clean it off so had it at work.
Now know first hand people's reactions to prominent facial tatoos.
It was interesting.
Lots of unasked for attention in the form of side eyed snatched glances, a definite curiosity and waryness from strangers edging on to fear even from big rough looking lads and inspite of my lack of physical prowess. Think lions sizing up honey badgers and wondering if a fight will end up with their noses bitten off by this phyco.
I really didn't like the atmosphere I generated.
Why would people do this to themselves?

Let s see a photo. I bet it looks less like a tattoo and more like a grown man who s been to a face painter. Would explain the strange looks you re getting.
Agreed. Having a face tattoo and your face panted are two very different things. Its like turning up to work in chavy clothes vs fancy dress.98elise said:

Highly doubt it looks like a tattoo and more like you haven't been home from a night out or possible mental health issues which is why no one wants to make eye contactWe are naturally drawn to something different. People cannot help but notice and as long as it stops at that then no harm done.
My cousin told me about a time when he looked at a ladies tattoo on the side of her neck. Him being an artist quite admired the skill that had gone into creating it.
She said what the f
k you looking at in an aggressive tone.
He stated that he was just admiring the artwork and surely the purpose of a visible tattoo is that it is there to be admired.
Fair play to her, she apologised and they had a good chat. She explained that her original reply was due to the negative comments she gets. She also said she understood why it would cause negative responses.
The tattoo itself was a oriental style dragon.

Back in the early '80s Tim Kelly was a bouncer at the Lyceum and 100 Club and I'd often get a tube back from a gig with him as he lived nearby.

He was one of the first people I saw with prominent face tattoos, and not somebody most people wanted to mess with.
Saw an old skinhead and his wife at Newcastle train station earlier in the year, smartly dressed, but the facial tattoos still managed to shock me a little.

I spend the majority of my life as a sort of blend into the background sort of guy and comfortable as being just a face in the crowd.
Can think of two occasions in my life where I've attracted that stare, look away, followed by furtive glances: one where I had a clash of heads playing with a 14 month old puppy and ended up with a nose (broken) about twice normal size and two black eyes (think a bout with Mike Tyson sort of look) and once after going through minor eye surgery but having to wear a monster (that poor bugger has lost an eye) post surgery eye patch.

That's an odd thing to say.

Of course, people are bound to look at someone with prominent injuries. However, if you think people were scared of you due to your children’s face paint, I’m sorry to say you’re wrong. They were probably just trying to work out a) what it was and b) why you’d left it on. I thought my mental health was fine.

Kind of get the feeling you enjoyed it though so maybe you could wash it off if you tired a bit harder…!
They used to be the preserve of the very very heavily tattooed, so usually tattoo artists or those in the genuine sort of underground counter culture...
These days they are the preserve of SoundCloud rappers, influencers and idiots.
And I say that as a heavily tattooed person (chest/back/arms/legs) but I'd never dream of doing my face.
The artist I go to, refuses to do hands/neck/face if you don't meet the heavily tattooed description already.
