DVLA reject Registration! Help
Discussion
I bought a beautiful 1969 VW Beetle 1500 that was imported from South Africa. The car is like new with a genuine 17000 miles (I checked back in SA). I have the import taxes paid (VOSA), I got it insured on its chassis number, got a certificate of manaufacturer from VW and filled out a mountain of paperwork. Sent all off to Swansea DVLA and waited. And waited. Finally yesterday everything was sent back to me because the VW certificate states that the car arrived in South Africa as CKD (Completely Knocked Down) to be built there. DVLA now argue that they don't have evidence of when the car was actually built up in South Africa and they have offered to register it as a 'Q" plate!! Can anyone who has gone through this debilitating process any guidance of my next moves? Thanks

If you have a Q plated car, can you then not fit a private, ageless reg??
no and no free road tax I once had a motorbike with a Q plate, never gave it any thought at the time (1980s) but it was a cheap, registered for the road/motocross bike so not really a problem anyway.
Absolutely going to keep it as I bought it for myself as a retirement present. No way am I going to accept a Q plate on a car with a VW Germanay Certificate of Manufacture in 1969. If it was on a Q could have been something I cobbled together in 2025! Some great advice so far and I have a few email addresses for South Africa VW heritage so will see where that leads.
Looks like it's not quite as active as it was, but some very knowledgeable people on here:

Is a Q plate so bad? Or are you in it for a quick flip?
Yes, Q plates are that bad.I wouldn't want one if I could avoid it.
Hope you get it sorted OP.
Any info on what they will accept as supporting evidence it was built there?
Also... if they agree it was a CKD kit but are claiming you might have built it up yourself just now... surely it should get a 75 reg?
Did your SA registration document state the date of first registration? If so, you have provided too much information! You should reapply and on the V55/5 you should provide the date of first registration (per SA title) and use the same year for the year of manufacture. For all the classics I have imported, there has never been an issue with not providing manufacturer proof of manufacture date (indeed many such records don’t exist). Why did you feel the need to provide that?
I think you may have shot yourself in the foot by being too helpful.

I have only imported one vehicle, for which I supplied DVLA with the original registration document which, like our V5, has only the date of first registration in that country and no mention of date of manufacture. The DVLA accepted that and issued me a V5 with the same date of first registration and an age-appropriate number plate.
I was actually impressed with how smoothly and quickly it was processed.
