Six months ago, I responded to a promo for a BA Amex card. I do a fair bit of international work so I figured I may as well build the old Avois pot as I go. I've since booked a few flights and purchase a few other bits and bobs with it. Settle in full at the end of the month from the business account.

Got a call today from them saying that isn't allowed! I have to settle the bill from a private account. If I need to use it for business, I need a Business Amex card.

I responded by saying not to worry, I'll just transfer anything owed to my personal account and pay from that if that's what's needed.

But he said that's not allowed either!

I did ask a); why and b); how would they know, both answered with reference to the terms and conditions.

All seems very odd! Anyone else have any inkling as to why this is the case?

how would they know where it comes from unless the description on your amex statement says ‘business account’ ?

Because they charge more for a Business Amex card?

I did this for about 5 years. Paid each month from my own account once my expenses claim came into my personal account.
How would they ever know ?

Probably a money laundering concern if the funds aren t coming from the cardholder s account.

I put, and know others that put, lots of business expenses through their personal Amex cards with no issue (paid from personal bank accounts).

Amex charges higher merchant fees on its business cards so if you are using it for a business they will try and enforce that.

Same, but for many years. Though I imagine they know full well what's business and what's personal from the type of purchases and pattern of use.

I've seen it before that if it's a personal card the payment has to come from a personal account, but you can pay a business card off from a personal account.

Swap it out for capital on tap… earn the same amount of points and the points can be transferred to avios. However the points can be used for better and better value gift cards.

Let me know if you want a referral. I have both Amex platinum and capital on tap and spend about £3m PA on card - the vast majority goes through Capital on tap.

I got rid of my AMEX cards about 2 years ago now. Cap on Tap for business and a Virgin card for personal as I use Virgin Airlines a lot.

Cap on Tap gives you 1% back as gift cards and I'm currently clearing £100k a month on it. My wife thinks I have a Selfridges addiction biggrin. I am now a VIP Selfridges member too. CoT gives you Priority Pass and a few other hotel perks etc. Accepted loads more places, including some suppliers that didn't do AMEX.

I think now other cards are catching up, AMEX is losing ground.

One downside of a business debit/credit card is that companies you buy from can charge you a processing fee. With personal cards, it is illegal in the UK for them to charge you a fee.

I’m the same but Mr John Lewis and Hotels.com!! If you prepay your cap card you earn 1.25%!

On purchases or the balance that might pile up? Presumably not a credit card so no S75 protection?

Yeah I read about that, it's 1.25% on purchases from the credit balance, it's a nice addition and assume you still have the protection.

Mastercard, so get protection. Don’t know the ins and out, but I have a 90k limit and spend approx 50k per week. I pay it down approx 50k per week and keep my balance under the 90k - so never incur interest charges.

Every so often I might chuck a lump at it and preload it. I then earn 1.25% when doing this.

Plus if you have a bill larger than your credit limit, but still want to earn points - you can just preload it.

You should see how much it is to accept business credit cards ! I block them for this reason
