1998 Rover Mini Cooper
Discussion
Hi Cargenie. Fair question, and I understand that many classic Minis look great on the surface, but are rotten underneath. Here are a few comments.
1. It was bought as an investment, from a prestigious classic car dealer. In a showroom full of supercars and exotic classics. This IS NOT, nor ever has been someone's daily driver.
2. I've added around 4500 miles since purchase. Maybe a couple of hundred of those have been in the wet/damp. The rest of the time it's been kept in a bone-dry underground garage.
3. I've been able to find a single, small bubble on the paintwork (photographed). My guess is that it was there when I first bought it and I simply didn't notice.
4. The rest is showroom standard. At the last MOT, the tester (in his late 50s) remarked on never having seen one in such good condition.
5. It's a 27 year old car, made by a manufacturer with famously crap quality control. Like every Mini, it has the odd vibration, rattle or quirk. But in general, it's gorgeous — as good as you will find anywhere outside of a museum.
So, can you drive it? Of course!! And you should. It's beautiful, drives like Mario-Kart and puts a smile on people's faces wherever it goes. Should you use it for driving it to work and back? Absolutely not!
