Hi all my garrett t3 turbo seems to be leaking oil into my exhaust , smoking badly.

I have replaced the rubber seals inside the turbo but to no joy. Looking for some advice on what to try next.

Engine is a 1.6 cvh mfi , That is a nightmare to start first thing - think i have a vacuum leak not pulling the plunger plate down ontop of the turbo oil leak.

Thanks.

rubber seals ?

History behind this ? Is the oil return ok ? crankcase breathing ok ?

I cant help you specifically on this, but I’m rebuilding a RS turbo, I’m about 80% through, I’ve got almost all of my answers to things I’ve got stuck on through the Ford RS Owners Club forum, are you not a member? There seems to be someone whos been there and got the T-shirt and knows the answer to everything specific to the RS models on there.

I'm not to sure what I'm checking for making sure it's breathing properly? Just noticed I'm missing this one way valve if it is a one way valve?
Yes had the return off , cheers

Buy yourself a 100 quid smoke tester off ebay.
That should soon find any air/boost leaks and also help see if the turbo seals are leaking. They will pass a little bit of smoke.
Might also be able to use it to see if the rings are worn and sump pressurising.

Mfi needs no air leaks for good running but poor starting could also be coolant temp sender under the inlet manifold.

The non return valve off the inlet was a series 2 improvement to assist with crankcase breathing. Stopping inlet pressure on boost in the breather, although I think the black filter also has a one way built in as standard.
Check the black filter and hoses aren't blocked with mayonnaise.

Thanks some good info there , i have smoke machine thats tomorrows job. It fires up when i hold the flap down on metering unit , i replaced the rings already how do i check if the sump is pressurising? hoses and little black filters new.

I would start by Dropping the exhaust off the turbo elbow onto a jack to aid refitting, only a couple of 17mm nuts. remove oil feed to turbo and should be able to wiggle the oil return off the block.

Put smoke in the turbo via oil feed , turn the turbo wheel so oil has drained from the seal. See how much comes out of the turbo exhaust elbow. Block the return oil flow slightly to see if it makes a difference.
Is there any play in the turbo wheel ?

Possibly wind each piston to tdc and apply smoke via plug hole, see what is passing the rings and comes out of sump...either whilst you have oil return off or just pull dipstick out.

Whats the history behind your issues?

I would guess pushing the flap down gives more fuel, either because an air leak isn't allowing the system to do the task, the cold start enrichment isnt working or the metering head base mixture is too lean.
go simple first air leaks.
