I noticed Merlin cycles have some "Re-cycled" 4iii powermeters for around £200 which seems like good value:

Previously I've only ever used a power meter with my turbo trainer/zwift but I seem to see a lot of people having issues with them on their road bikes (but I think they could have been Stages powermeters?)

Firstly is this type of powermeters worth it? (I'm aware it's only single sided) And does anyone have any real life feedback? Something which constantly breaks down or gives random figures would drive me mad!

Not used a 4iiii but my sram dub power meter crank is single sided and it’s within a few watts of the power my turbo trainer zwift hub reports. It’s certainly been accurate enough for pacing rides and climbs.

I've got a couple of Quarq spider ones and a 4iii one.

One of the Quarq ones was used for commuting in all weathers for 6 years and is still going strong. The spider ones give leg imbalance, mine aren't bad so I wasn't bothered by a single sided one.

I mostly got the 4iii as I wanted full Dura Ace on the bike and the Shimano power meter is a bit st. The 4iii is fine.

I don't cycle consistently enough to make proper use of outdoor powermeters but I find them really useful to meter my efforts on longer rides and enjoy going through the data afterwards.

I saw those, have 4 of them and find them pretty good. They must have realised eBay was full of cheap left hand cranks and started a sideline…

Never managed to get the apple find my working

Yeah it does make me wonder where all these "lightly used" left side crank arms came from!

The drive side crank on my old Ultegra 6800 crank split due to the hollow tech issue, I had a non-driveside arm as a result that I sold on eBay!

Hhhhmmmm I think I'll sleep on it, power meter has been useful for Zwift etc. but I'm not sure how much I would use it on the road.

Also if my turbo trainer and the 4iiii power meter aren't displaying similar figures it's a bit pointless. If my turbo trainer is giving a slightly off figure at least I'm always comparing my self to that slightly dodgy figure.

The 4iiii power meter on the otherhand might actually give a better reading and show all those missing watts I've been chasing for years hehe

You can adjust the 4iiii to compensate for uneven pedalling power (it’s one sided so if you pedal more strongly with your right leg it is doubling a power output to an inaccurate figure.

So you could if you were so inclined calibrate it to match.

It also serves as a cadence meter etc.

They are not perfect but if you have a garmin unit that will output power I find them quite useful.

I've got a one sided 4iii power meter on my road bike - had it for about 3 years now and had no issues at all. Seems accurate too when running it in tandem with turbo trainer indoors - the latter connected to computer and former to bike head unit for the same ride, showing within a couple of watts of each other. I'd definitely recommend it at that price particularly. Got some Favero power pedals on my mountain bike which are also very good. If you are deciding which to buy then on balance I'd say get pedals, as they are then easier to take to a new bike in the future, or on holiday to use on a hire bike if you ever do that.
