Hello all

Having a 25m long electric car cable it is a huge hassle picking it away and having it go over a path.

Theres enough length to hide it under gravel and leave it out and plugged in all the time

( car end would be hidden away waterproof when not using)

Is this possible ? Or even advisable

Thankyou

I imagine that anything buried would need to be armoured to avoid the risk of anyone sticking a fork through it even if it’s in your private land.

Would definitely armour cable it if it's possible and wouldnt / couldn't damage the cable or car.

25m to sort everytime is very annoying

Is it the "car cable", or a fancy extension lead?

Regs aren't simple, but generally electric cables should be buried enough that you don't expect them to get damaged. In some places that's "not much", in others it might be a lot deeper e.g. 600mm. Some cables are designed for burial and some aren't. Chances are that a "car charging cable" isn't designed for burial. Some e.g. Tough Leads are better, and it's worth giving them a call.

What is "correct" and "what works" may be very different here!

Many people have granny chargers on extension leads running all over the place, and they work. Perhaps there's a middle ground to put a granny charger there, there if it's not possible to bury the current cable- then only pull out the big 7kw charger when you need more?

Its a 25m full electric lead. Very heavy. Annoying.to put away

The car from the charge is about 20m so I have enough slack to bury it permanently and have it hidden from.the garden and just plugged in when needed

Im not familiar with electric charging but it may be possible to run an armoured cable to the area you need from the charging point.
You would need your existing lead at the end of this but that`s not such an issue if another outdoor socket/junction box was installed, all weatherproof of course.
Obviously a job for a spark to look at.

This is the correct way to do it, a fused spur leading to an outdoor socket with armoured burrowed cable.

When you say: "over a path" Is that still all on your property, or is it a public path?

If it's all your property, then you need to consider just having the charger nearer the car, which would mean mounting the charger remotely and using underground cable etc.

Just need to run it in some type of trunking so its easy to access if you need to change the cable. Something like aco drain channels would do it then just hide it with the gravel.

This is what I would do although I'd use something cheap like 100mm drainage pipe. It would protect against most shovel-related damage (find a cheaper supplier though).

The normal approach would be to put a standard (albeit quite fat) armoured mains cable to near where you park, then install a socket/charger there to plug the EV-specific cable into.

Didnt think of that. Would be far cheaper.

Seems it's doable.

Thanks all

Yeah the 100mm drainage looks better. Put a draw rope in when you install it , easy to pull the charger cable through then .

Or each new section that gets dropped into the trench and connected - pull the cable 3 metres forward and repeat.

It would save pulling the complete 25 metres through in one go.

Less to go wrong.

They can be fswines to push together in the ground ,if its a straight run its easier to connect them first then drop in the ground ,then pull cable through. Thats what i found anyway.

Looked at those to begin with. Still hassle.

Current layout is a slalom. 2 paths. 1 gate. 1 fence. 25m total. Car is about 20 21m away.

You can get flexible twinall duct in 94/110mm diameter but pulling the cable through could be tricky if the bends are tight:
