Driving Licence Renewal - Over 55s
Discussion
Can anyone give chapter-and-verse regarding the impending changes to licence renewal? Google searching produces a load of conflicting and probably downright inaccurate info.
I gather that mandatory eye-tests may/may not be necessary, and that the renewal will be every 5 rather than 10 years. Also no one place is able to specify the exact date of the change(I've seen everything from August to November).

Don't believe all you read in the "click-bait" gutter press fake news you see on t'interwebz!I gather that mandatory eye-tests may/may not be necessary, and that the renewal will be every 5 rather than 10 years. There are no changes to licences for over 55's.
For a start DVLA is already sunk in it's current workload, an increase like that would completely break the back of all of their camels.

At least the stock 'we're experiencing high call volumes' would be accurate There are no changes to licences for over 55's.

Well as a commercial pilot I can fly to 65. Obvs I have annual medicals and eye tests. Mine is still 20:20 but not as good as it was. I'm 62.
I would have no problem with annual tests to drive.
In fact I've had several friends that have struggled with the conversation especially if their parents are rural. Often it means selling the house. Because they are unable to live in their current place without children organising deliveries for them.
As far as driving is concerned?
I think we should test old people like me. Maybe every 5 years.
I've been tested my entire professional life so I don't mind that.

In some clickbait that I saw it was a warning (always a warning) to renew a photocard driving licence which is every 10 years.
What are the implications of a photocard driving licence being expired? Insurance not valid? Hire company won't hire you a vehicle?
Why doesn't DVLA send reminders?

Basically there are none when you have applied you continue driving, no insurance implications or anything, you are just getting a fresh pic added and you have not lost any entitlement to drive, it is basically just like you have left it at home. What are the implications of a photocard driving licence being expired? Probably as per my earlier post DVLA have too much to do at the moment and the system is broken/overloaded so they can't cope with any more to do would be my best guess. Also, I wonder if there is something in the paperwork you receive that says "it is your duty etc".

I've heard nothing about this yet and I'm 57...
Because it is bollards. My photocard was due to expire in January which is why I was enquiring, and when I mentioned that to a few mates they put the fears into me that I would need proof of an eye test and that my renewal would expire after 5 years instead of 10. They were of course quoting from the clickbait they'd casually skimmed after following whatever link in whatever BS social media post....Anyhoo, just decided to renew the card a month and a half early (delaying it would have saved me 23p!). Took minutes on-line as it was possible to re-use my passport picture which I renewed a couple of years ago.
