Odd I know.... but these are the choice for the next car to add to the fleet.
They cost around the same for decent one, but is the Maserati going to be a heart breaker?

I'd have thought the 928 would cost more in maintenance.

I knew some Maserati owners in Kent and can give a little feedback in terms of the specialists they used for servicing and repairs.

I can't comment on the Maserati, but can give you a few thoughts on the 928.

I assume you have a budget of about £25,000 (unless you are going for a later model 4.7 GT, in which case, about £30,000).

£25,000 will get you into a very nice 928 S4 auto - one which has had all the big jobs done and will be a good quality car. It might get you an earlier manual, though that is probably going to be closer to £30,000. An S4 manual will be £30,00 plus and then around £40,000 plus for a GTS manual.

In terms of running costs- it's all preventative maintenance really. Cambelt every 4 years, which with water pump, is an £800 job - the two main experts are Loo Bank in Lancashire and 928 Specialists in Stroud. There are a few others, but the 928 seems to scare the typical 911 indy away. They are not necessarily complex cars but, they have a lot of nuances that would be an exercise in Dunning Kruger for someone who's not familiar with them.

One thing to check, especially for the auto, is thrust bearing wear - the drive shaft clamp can move ever so slightly and cause terminal wear. Easy to check and so long as there are no issues, easy to stop with a £350 Ritech clamp.

People talk about the electrics, but they really are not as bad as made out - the issues are mostly age related - crusty wiring and friable Bosch connectors. It is very ground sensitive, so a good clean of the many grounds is a must.

If the key things have been done then they are reliable - mine has just done 2x 750 trips to France and the only issue I had was the air con was a bit feeble - needs some new o-rings fitting, which I can do and will ready for next year. This can affect any car really.

A lot of the parts are standard Bosch or Valeo, plenty comes rom VW and the box and a lot of the HVAC is Mercedes. On the subject of HVAC - it is vacuum driven and can be a monster faff if it fails - dash out in some cases but al labour and not much in parts.

Tyres are £120 a corner, pads and discs pretty boggo

Engines are massively under stressed for all models and while you will hear talk of a head gasket refresh needed at 120,000 miles, it is not something I have heard in the forums.

Personally, while I like the Maserati, it is in danger of heading the same way as the Conti GT - too many used for transportation of pharmaceutical supplies.

A well sorted 928, with the suspension geo correctly set up ,(they are surprisingly agile), and an X pipe, is a great car.

The GranTurismo will be the more reliable option as long as you're looking at a 4.7, the 4.2's can suffer with cam variator issues.

I have no expertise on the 928, other than it is sublime and likely to go up in price if well looked after,

I have however run a Granturismo (4.2) for 10 years, mine has been faultless... It is absolutely beautiful and is sonerously addictive. It has the odd niggle... random issues... which do fix themselves strangely enough. Selective 'sticky button' syndrome..

Cannot sell it... it is just too... how shall we say 'peak desirable'

My opinion prices will bottom out (probably around now) and it will be an appreciating classic one day.

I have looked at 928s recently and they are appealing. I have just bought a Granturismo as a “useable classic”
I loved the way it looks and sounds and we had a QP which we ran from 40k to 140k and it still used no oil. I am not sure of the running costs but I reckon 2k a year but that was used daily for everything and a lot of tyres and brakes. For less use I think it would be cheaper
Check the subframe carefully.

Thank you for all the replies.
I did notice that the rent on the Maserati is £760!! Not a deal breaker, but still needs to be considered.
It would be a 4.7 Maserati, btw. The 928 would be an auto - the reason being that my left ankle is trashed and the Chimaera is getting a bit painfull to drive for any distance.
I will need to go and try both to see if one is more appealing.
