Hi all

Being lazy and looking to shortcut this. I recently bought a modern head unit for my Range Rover classic I’ve just finished restoring. The original factory stereo lights up but does no more, it’s just dead.

I expected it to come with some form of cable to adapt to the car. But it hasn’t.

Pictures below, but the stereo is 2 connectors with 8 pins, but my car has 1 8 pin and 1 10 pin??

If anyone can help me find the right adapter I would be very grateful. It’s a minefield out there. hehe

Did the new one come with ISO plugs?

If it did, just cut the original ones off & re-make the wiring onto the tails of the plugs with the new one.

I say that because the red one looks like the wiring has been extended & taped over a few inches from the end unless that black tape is original.

the stereo looks a standard 16 pin set up,

Your car is the odd one and may of been re-wired in the past for a specific brand of stereo. I would buy a universal harness from the internet and rewire it with that

Never messed with stereo's before. is it just a case of cutting and colour matching wires? Weird thing is, fitted was a FACTORY stereo!! So no real reason for someone to have chopped the loom

No, it is a simple case of following the car wiring diagram with reference to the stereo wiring diagram/pin out which is generally on a sticker on the stereo itself.

Furry muff, was just suspicious about the tape on the loom.

ETA.
The other benefit of doing it like this is you can end up with a much tidier job because it certainly looks like somebody had done it before on that wiring.

Perhaps an aftermarket one was previously fitted & then returned to standard for selling.

Is this on a P38 with the Clarion factory headunit and amplifier? If so, you'll need one of these: https://incartec.co.uk/product/range-rover-amplifi...

I think the loose RCA cable will need to go to the subwoofer output on the new headunit but I'm not 100%. You'll also need to ensure the blue remote turn on cable on the adapter harness is connected to the remote/antenna output on the new headunit as well as the amplifier wont turn on otherwise.

Edit: re-read the OP and the only adapters I can see for a Range Rover classic are for much older looking round pin connectors like the below. Is it possible LR put P38 bits in?

1993 very late model LSE. With a clarion head unit and amplifier (OSR in the boot covered with some carpet). could well be the same as the P38....

Yes you may be right. I did think this after i replied. perhaps the factory radio was dead, someone stuck and after market in with a harness, then took that out and put the dead unit back before selling

It's very likely that adapter I linked will be the one you need then. You could always contact InCarTec for advice, they are usually very helpful.
