Few questions about my new-to-me BMW please (F850GS for reference).

1) What does the adaptive headlight do? I've watched some videos where I understand it adapts as you turn into a corner. However, when I turn it on all it seems to do is dip the beam so much that I can see no more than a few feet in front of me. It might help in the corners (not sure) but going straight it is not good!

2) I have Sat Nav Prep I think it is called. What solution are people going with here? I'm thinking the BMW cradle for my phone (but it might be too big - Pro Max - and vibration concerns?), a Carpuride or a Chigee. Any recommendations or advice?

3) Linked to the above, I have just bought a Cardo (Freecom 4x). I first connected it to my phone but then connected it to the TFT, which I think overrode the phone connection. I want to be able to listen to podcasts on Spotify and found the TFT interface a bit of a faff. One of the above solutions will help in this regard I suppose but I want to ask about what connects to what? I imagine the phone connects to the TFT and the device, then the Cardo connects to one or the other, but not both? Any best practice here?

Cheers all.

I haven't got a GS but have three mates with them and they all run with a carpuride and say they work brilliantly with the BMW system.
I'll ask them if you don't get a reply on here.

I have the phone cradle adaptor thing - and it's not great (should probably put on eBay), I also have a carpuride - and it's a lot better. They do a BMW specific version now that works with the wonder wheel thing - they are touch screen and work well enough with gloves on.

I have phone and cardo connected to the TFT - and the carpuride connected to my phone (as it's just a screen extension really) works fine, slight annoyance that the bike cuts power to the carpuride when you press the starter button (900GS), so it disconnects and you have to wait while it all wakes up again.

I have the Chigee screen and it integrates well with the bike plus Android Auto (it also does carplay if you have an iPhone) and can be controlled via the wonder wheel. It delays shutdown so doesn't switch off when the starter is pressed.

I link the headset to the TFT and my phone but wonder wheel control of the audio doesn't work as cardo don't support it.

I use a CPMC for carplay. Much cheaper than the alternatives (healthy discount from the Missenden Flyer youtube channel too) and works really well. I pair bluetooth to the phone and then control the phone through the CPMC.

Thanks all. Money-no-object I think I'd go Chigee but not sure I want to spend that much really. Can get the 5" Carpuride with no wheel control for about 120 quid on Amazon but I'd ideally like to utilise the wheel.

I'll have a look at this CPMC option too. Thank you.

One thing I have noticed with all the devices is that it doesn't appear that any of them allow the locking mechanism to be applied. Is this so?

I bought a Carpuride W702BS, which works with the wunderwheel on my GSA, from Amazon back in August. £223 at the time. I see they’re more expensive now, but worth checking for discount codes and possibly buying direct from Carpuride.

It locks to the nav prep on my bike so I assume it would on an F850 GS too.

Before the Carpuride I used the BMW Connected Ride app on my iPhone and a Quad Lock, then afterwards the iPhone / app / Coneected Ride Cradle. The CRC meant I could use the wunderwheel and wireless charge. It was more convenient than a Quad Lock but still had some downsides. You have to remember to take your phone with you. I didn’t, more than once, and had to rush back to the bike to rescue it. Also, I stop to take photos when touring and this meant taking the phone out of the holder each time. The connection between bike, headset and phone was often unstable and you needed to disconnect and start again. The biggest problem though is the Connected Ride app. It’s very buggy, not often updated, and when it is you stand as much chance of it being crocked in a new and surprising way as you do of having it fixed. After a particularly poor performance from it while in France last year I binned it off.
