The Alters - appreciation
Discussion
Is there a thread for this game already?
I'm a middle age gamer, who I think like a lot of people find it hard to get into a lot of modern games. I think it's partly that it's difficult for new games to live up to the innovation of old games. More and more stunning graphics isn't enough. It s probably also with the added complication meaning they require more time to master perhaps & time being more limited as you get older. Apart from the odd indy game, like Firewatch or Still Wakes the Deep.
Anyway, I posted to say even given the above. I have thoroughly enjoyed The Alters!
While not wanting to give away spoilers. It's very well written, premium feel, gets the balance of complication vs ease just right and pretty innovative. The concept is good, and very well implicated. I can't remember the last game that I got so engrossed in. I think it's an example of what modern gaming could being doing, instead of sequels with more bells & whistles.

I played it on Game Pass, but the sub expired before I could finish it....think I got to the 3rd zone? Just over the lava fields.
I think the relationships were handled well, with everyone generally being negative as it was a s
t situation so it was just about trying to avoid fights/breakdowns rather than get everyone to think you're the king. There was enough time pressure to keep you on your toes without feeling like you couldn't explore or try things out. Enjoyed the base building elements as well.
That being said, there wasn't enough for me to feel compelled to purchase it or extend Game Pass for it....I think I just didn't feel like I was actually progressing, and therefore wasn't getting that satisfaction playing it...feels like it depends if you enjoy gaming where you're constantly 'on the edge of failure' which is how it felt.
I'd give it another go if I got back on GamePass for other reasons however, to see how it played out.

I could see it being a bit of a marmite game. I did get a bit frustrated in the second part; things got a bit out of control and the crew where annoying. I realised I'd left the first part to early. So, I went back to an old save at the end of the 1st part and did some base building and resource gathering. After that it was a lot better.
The 3rd part is a bit easier on that side of things, with the combat (if you can call it that) being more of a thing.
I never really replay games, but I think this game would be worth replaying through a couple of times. I suspect for a lot it might be a bit short, by the time you learn everything it's over. But as it was on game pass that wasn't an issue for me. An expansion for it would be nice…although difficult to fit with the story.
I recommend doing what I did and replaying from the end of the first part once you're a bit into the 2nd part.
I'm also playing Alan Wake 2 at the moment, which again seems very impressive. Both are the best games I've played in a long time. Like buses.....
