Hi all,

I am heading to Paphos at the end of the month handling late relatives' probate, part of which is selling a car while there.

Does anyone have any first hand experience of selling a car to a dealer in Cyprus and recommendations for one? I'm looking into the private sale route too but time is fairly limited to be sorting that while I'm there. Feel free to DM me if easiest.

Any help much appreciated.

Cheers

Might not be much help but On one of our trips to Paphos a few years ago and when walking around, I recall seeing a garage that had a lot of UK registered (I think) cars in their yard and for sale. At the moment, I can’t quite remember where about a it was although I will have a think and look at Google maps to see if I can work it out.

Thanks EBVD, that would be very helpful, much appreciated.

Sorry for delay. I have had a look on Google maps around the areas that we used to walk and I haven’t been able to find anything that looked familiar. It is a few years ago to be fair and it may have closed down.

Used car prices here in Cyprus are crazy, compared to the UK.
If you want UK type money for the car you'll sell it immediately.
If you want Cyprus market value it will take a lot longer.

Having said that, "ANW Cars" are in Paphos, and are worth a shout!

No problem at all, thanks for the reply.

Thanks CS! I spoke to them already actually, seems manual cars are less popular than autos so they weren't interested. Mind if I PM you if you're based out there? Thanks

No problem, I'm based near Limassol, so my knowledge of Paphos isn't great.

That’s because most of them will be nicked from the UK! Cyprus being one of the top destinations for stolen cars from the UK! A high proportion of the high end cars you see driving around Cyprus are all nicked from the UK for example.

This is a really difficult question to answer, without knowing what car you re trying to sell. Have you received probate on the estate? If not, the car can t be sold. It s a ridiculously antiquated process to get probate in Cyprus.

Have a look on bazaraki.com to get a feel for the cars value, but knock 10-15% off if it s a manual. Some cars are well sought after that you d be surprised at. Older Honda SUVs and smaller Jimmy type vehicles are loved by pool cleaners and sell very quickly for decent money. You re unlikely to offload a manual car to any car dealer, as they know they ll struggle to shift it.

Knowing what car it is and a few details might help, you never know I might know someone looking for just your type of car.

I’m Paphos based

That s utter BS. Maybe an issue on the occupied side, but try getting a car into Cyprus in a dodgy way and you d be seriously surprised how difficult it is.

Ain t that the truth. We ve just finally finished tying up the FIL s estate over there - 4 years after he died.

It's a massive pain isn't it. I scoffed when the funeral director initially said it could take up to 4 years. March will be 5 years so far. Long.

Hi - received your DM and just replied. Hope it helps.

Just to add, your challenge with this won’t necessarily be the price. It’s finding the person who wants a manual over here. You’re unlikely to get a Cypriot buyer, as changing gear will interfere with their handheld mobile phone use, which is obviously more important than watching what they’re doing when driving.

Just want to drop a public shout out to CypSIdders and Opapayer for their replies and help on this topic. Through CS I was introduced to a nice couple who bought the car. Thanks both!

You sure it was Paphos? In the North of Cyprus, cars are imported from either the UK or Japan and retain their original plates until they're purchased at which point they're then registered locally and a local plate applied. The law was changed a few years ago requiring the re-registering to take place prior to them going on sale which aligns to what happens in the south, so you see less of this these days.

15 years ago that might have been the case but no so much these days.

Most high-end stolen cars end up elsewhere. Surprising how many right hand drive cars you see in Kosovo and Albania wink

No problem, I was happy to help.

The couple who bought the car are very, very pleased with it.

Iraq / Kurdistan too...
The number of high end BMW and Mercs still on UK plates that I saw whilst I was out there was incredible.
