Question Time, last night.

This towering inferno of right wing academia simply takes no prisoners.

He knows everything and outsmarts any panellist with an acerbic vigour which is honest, refreshing and often humorously compelling.

Best of all though, his camp stridency occasionally veers off into direct abuse and in the case of one of Tony's most impressive drones, young Dougie Alexander, the barking rebuke was hysterical:

"Don't patronise me, you stupid little twit!"

What a absolute STAR!

Well, that's not exactly the height of wit is it? "Oh bugger off you old fart!" as Prince George might have said.

On the other hand, it does sound like he gave the Labour scum a proper verbal lashing; Top man!

Seems fair to me.

Yet if Prince Charles (or anyone in the Royal Family)had said it , there'd be weeks of media coverage and everyone would slag them off. Odd.

Yes, he does come across as rather pompous.

As far as TV historians go, I much prefer Richard Holmes. Has he ever been on QT?

He was fantastic -- the young and very naive 25 yr old LibDem MP next to him had the piss taken out of her at least twice by him ......

- once when she expressed genuine surprise to the assertion that the Labour Party was driven to action ONLY by media headlines ( re breast cancer drugs being available on NHS ).

- and once when she gave a rather muddled answer - "try using some logic " I think he said. very funny.

She really looked like a child in comparison, I thought he was ace. One thing struck me about the comments he made about the NHS, that utlimately it comes down to rationing. So true. But the audience didn't really warm to this, which I think is where much of the problems lie nowadays. People just don't like the truth anynmore. They want a chocolate box lifetsyle with it all neat and tidy and perfect. Life just isn't like that. It remids me of a comment made after 9/11 when someone said that defeating terrorism may be a dirty business so we better be prepared to get dirty doing it. Most people just aren't ready for truth.....

Absolutely - he was spot-on with his summary of the NHS - I was rather disappointed to see the lack of support from the audience.

I think we have a real problem "paradigm"(?) - in the UK in that the whole concept of State provided medical care isnt challenged or debated enough - people just get all emotional about it and logic goes out the window - so the 50 year-old set-up just trundles along consuming more and more £££ every year..

Too true. That about sums up the level of political debate these days, and it isn't helped by the way the media rant away to sell papers.

It can be seen often on here as well - you only have to start a thread on religion, crime, the EU etc. for it to descend into inane slanging matches.

Indeed equally if some petulent chav like Michael Carol who had never done a days work in their lives had said it then there would have been a similar uproar and quite rightly. You see if you make a negative contribution to society then you should expect to be regarded with disdain.

it was a masterful performance, certainly. best for me was when he refused to apologise to the minister and justified his earlier comment "I think it's fair to say that he is a little twit!"

what a guy!

I thought he was an arrogant arse. As for patronising the liberal democrat, that was pathetic. I have never seen anyone resort to directly insulting anyone on QT before. (As shown by David Dimbelby's reaction) A very sad old tory that could not cope with the fact that New Labour have stolen half the Tory policies right out from under their noses.....

Should he ever fall on his nose then it'd be due to slipping on oil dripping from behind the ears of lib dem neopinko débutantes, then falling over all the incompetent socialists bimbling around nu labialand with their pygmy intellects and stature to match.

Partisan politics aside, for a man hell bent on achieving shallow fame by dry erudition to camera, that total absence of wit or verbal dexterity is a sure sign he possesses a large dose of hubris that will cause him to fall flat on his bulbous nose one day ... in public.

His comedic value stems from his camp, theatrical arrogance.

I don't know why you feel he will come unstuck in debate: he presents a consistent political conviction backed up by a heavily researched, deeply academic bank of knowledge, all wrapped up, signed, sealed & delivered with a bitchy, steely delivery.

I would put him alongside Tony Benn and Enoch Powell in the lascerating genius stakes.

Have to agree with DeR here. Just viewed the programme online and his withering contempt for that Labour weasel was a sight to behold. Pompous, to a degree, yes - but not to the point where it will be his undoing - and still a joy to watch.
