Hi all. I will be needing a new second car in April. 24mile round trip commute and some leisure use. Around 8000miles a year.

I'm torn between a cheap lease £230 a month

A 10k used car with bank loan

A 6k used car with bank loan

Whilst I've always enjoyed being in a new car, I am happy to drive a used one as long as I like the look and it's reliable. I prefer VAG group models

I wouldn't want to keep it more than 4 years. Any advice appreciated

Many thanks

The cheap lease deal, how much is the deposit? Over what profile? What car?

If you have a 3 pin plug accessible at home or work that commute sounds perfect for an EV, many used ones are down below 10k now. Probably the cheapest, most reliable and comfiest way of doing it. Good luck.

Oh I hadn't thought of that mate! So wouldn't need an installation?

I have access to plenty plugs in garage

Should I be concerned about used car batteries? Would an e208 fit the bill?

Looking at a Ibiza or 208gt (I know engines st but who cares on lease)

3 months down, 8000miles. Roughly same price over two or three years

10k bank loan I'm thinking a golf/Leon/Scirocco,a3

6k I'm thinking Yaris, i10 type thing but would get no pleasure out of it!

Not for your mileage, charging on a 3 pin will net about 8 miles of range an hour, on a normal tariff it would be about 100 mpg equivalent. Best bit is having an already warmed up interior free from ice from the start. Batteries are more durable than expected. Many EVs over 15 year old on the roads.

At around 6.5k you can get some good options at this price.

Given your buying criteria I'd be looking at an EV - Renault Zoe or Nissan Leaf at the lower end.

Some kinda Pontiac, I guess

Seriously though, yes e208 is a good shout if you like the look (and can get on with the i-Cockpit ie wheel in your lap), can count on roughly 110 miles winter motorway range (ie worst case). As others have said, fuel costs with an EV will be about 4x lower if you charge off-peak overnight.

Would a Dacia Spring work for you?
If your second car never goes further than 50 miles from base, it looks tempting.
Under £200 a month and save £50 a month on fuel?
The thing is, you can then shift some local mileage from your first car onto the EV.

It would not quite work for us, we frequently need a bit more range from the 'other car'.

Or, if you actually like cars, get an MX5 or something.

Thanks mate. You've peaked my interest. Tbh I find the leaf and Zoe not to my tastes, despite probably being most sensitive option!

The e-golf looks a really good car. And I like the 208 as well.

My only concerns are resale value as that's what makes a used car more viable than a lease. Am I likely to get 4/5 years out of an EV and it still be worth anything? Thanks so much

I'll check that deal out. Not the biggest Dacia fan but worth considering. Thanks

On lifespan, a 5yo car has another 3 years of battery warranty remaining. Even beyond that, it seems at least as likely to keep going as an equivalent petrol car - I think you'd be unlucky for it to become unviable to repair.

On resale, looking at 5yo 208s, the electric and petrol versions are around the same price, starting at about £9k.
A 10yo petrol 208 today is worth about £4k.
There aren't any 10yo e208s, but a 10yo Zoe is also worth about £4k.

So I guess you could estimate roughly £1k/year in depreciation, maybe round up to £100/month to compare to the lease. And that looks similar whether you buy a petrol or electric car.

The e-Golf is well liked as a car, although it has a smaller battery and so less range. But if the range suits you then it's probably a better buy as values are a bit lower accordingly, despite it being a bigger car. The Mk7.5 facelift has ~50% larger battery than the original Mk7.
