For years my left eye was pretty stable, -1.0 for a long time then changed to -0.75 a few years back. There's a couple of dioptres of astigmatism as well but also pretty stable.
In the last year or so I've noticed a deterioration and on getting an eye test I found it had gone to -1.50 from -0.75 two years ago. The optician was surprised but not concerned. What could cause this and is it likely to keep changing? I'm in my early 60s,

I don't think there's any specific cause as such. Eyesight is just one of those things that can change over time.

I've gone the other way. I used to need contacts or glasses for distance but was fine for up close stuff. That started to reverse around five or six years ago and no only need 1.75 readers for close up stuff and nothing for distance!

Interesting thought. There is a cataract getting started but I couldn't figure out how that could affect a refraction error. It's still correctable to 6/6.

This sounds similar to what happened to me, between Dec 2023 and July 2024 my prescription went from -1.00 to -4, then stopped being correctable. Oct & Dec 2024 I had cataract ops in both eyes. I am mid 50s, they can develop quickly at that age. The good news is that you can be referred for surgery as a priority (mine was 2 weeks) and your eyesight is great afterwards!

Good luck

Exactly my experience hence the post above but, for me, in my late 30's!

Rapid change in eyesight that even had my optician stumped - he eventually referred me to the eye hospital in Sunderland and the consultant immediately diagnosed a cataract. Less that a year later I had one in the other eye.

Both cataracts were done by the age of 41 - I'm now 63 and my eyesight is spot on, don't even need reading glasses. The surgeon did 'mono vision' implants so one eye does the distance bit and the other close to.

...very odd to get cataracts at my age as no family history and no historic trauma that may have caused it. The only issue it gives me is light scatter when night driving
