I'm looking at buying an old mb Civic. The AA don't do pre purchase inspection of cars more than 20 years old. Can anyone recommend anyone that does? I have seen advertised
RAC
National Vehicle Inspection
My Car Inspection
Can anybody recommend any of these?
Car is a 5 door 1.6 auto.
I have checked the MOT history and the only fails have been wearing items ( tyres brakes CV gaiters etc) no rust advisories, and I have done the £5 autotrader history check.

Any kind of inspection on a nearly 30 year old car is pointless, they wil point out that pretty much everything is worn and requires replacement.

Actually go and have a look at it yourself and have a proper look round it then make a decision based on what you have seen and what is shown in the MOT history.

Save the cost of the inspection and use it towards any repairs as and when they crop up.

But remember even though it may be clean and tidy the first time it does need a repair it could be just as much as the cost of the vehicle.

It looks good in the photos, ( don't they all!) but I don't want to be crawling around on the floor to check the underside. The lack of rust advisories on the MOT history is reassuring though.

I'd suggest taking it for a fresh mot.

Is it cheap, or do you want the best vintage civic?

The only thing that would be a problem in these is the rust - the drivetrain is bombproof. My suggestion is to go along in old clothes and crawl around underneath, checking all the usual rust spots.

Why would you not want to do this?

I think it cheap considering the condition, it's cheaper than the alternatives. It's less than I paid for my current 59 reg civic, which has had plenty of problems. I have had a few civics, and I think the older ones were better made.

try click mechanic.

they are much better than the AA or RAC for inspections, quicker to arrange, much cheaper and many of their guys seem to be current MOT inspectors or trained garage staff getting some extra income.

last time we got one done is was arranged and done within 24 hrs and was around £130.
