Few months ago I was bored and sprayed the boot handle on my little mini. It was originally black plastic and a bit marked so I rubbed it down, used a generic grey primer, 3-4 coats of colour then a coupe of lacquer.

Just washed the car and noticed this.

Did the same on some dash trim 2 years ago and they are still perfect, did I do something wrong or wrong products?

With my limited experience of painting. I’d say either too thick with the colour or top coat.

Thank you both. Operator error then.

Next time I've got the rattle cans out I'll try again (or just by a new one for a tenner of ebay!)

Your primer has shrunk back.

Unfortunately you need to sand it back and get the surface better before applying the primer, all those lines need to be either sanded out or filled and blocked out. Alternatively use a high build primer, lots of thin coats and let all it all shrink back for a few days before adding the colour and lacquer.

If its plastic I would also recommend you use a plastic adhesion primer before any other primer to get a good chemical bond to the plastic surface.

A lot of paint is solvent that needs to evaporate over time and in particular primer will shrink back as it fully dries out.
