Back story: I bought a 2018 F83 M4 Competition in March in a private sale. Had an inspection done before I bought it at a well-regarded specialist; all fine.

Bought the car; seller was a very pleasant chap; nothing untoward. I seem to recall there being some paperwork suggesting all injectors had been replaced under warranty before my ownership. I now can’t find this, unfortunately.

I’ve recently been having engine issues, and my local specialist has found that the bottom seals (apologies: don’t know the technical term) on all six injectors had not been put back. This caused a misfire and knackered one of the injectors. £680 later and it’s sorted.

My question is: do I have any hope of holding the main dealer who botched the original job to account without the paperwork? Would it show on any electronic record?

I’m no expert but, as it’s not you that has a contract with the dealer, I very much doubt it!

None whatsoever, no paperwork, you’re the second owner since the work was carried out and it was a private sale.

Suck it up and move on, it isn’t worth the hassle. Honestly, that’s a drop in the ocean to some bills a car like the M4 will throw up.

That’s what I suspected, but worth asking the question to try and lighten the bill.

If nothing else, this reinforces my belief that main dealers are often incompetent.

Bought in 2018 and it has just failed now 7 years later due to seals not put back on injectors.

Someone is pulling your plonker!

He didn't buy it in 2018, it is a 2018 car that he bought in March.

Somewhen before he bought it someone changed the injectors - but it wasn't 7 years ago!!

A possible route to take but you will still have to establish that the injectors have not been tampered with since they were done.
If you gone onto ebay and find seller who can provide a full copy of work done on BMW car-costs about £6.5 sent to your phone usually within 24hours its from BMW main computer records will shows all serving etc
A record should exist of work done(not always recorded by dealer these days they seem to have got lax about this).
Record of injector change which will give date . part no's used etc. BMW claim all work done guaranteed for 2 years. so if done in this time scale you can make a claim.

Not going to be easy - but could just try taking the car back to the garage that did it and asking them to check car. ( Missed bit about already been done unlikely to be fruitful)

Even if you had the paperwork, you didn't give the dealer the option of inspecting it or sorting the repair.

How would he know that it was potentially caused by that dealer until someone has had a look at the problem?
It wouldn’t then be practical to leave the car partly disassembled for the previous dealer to confirm or deny before fixing it.

Thank you: very helpful.

I feel like I’m missing some paperwork anyway, so I’ll probably get the full history and take it from there.

If you csn see the markings on the injectors, they may have something that shows their manufacture date or version number, so you can be certain they are indeed newer replacements, plus when I replaced my BMW injectors, all of them had unique individual serial numbers.

Now, I think that is purely for the manufacturer's own traceability, but perhaps if you're really lucky, it is actually recorded somewhere and could help trace if they were the injectors fitted to that car by that dealer on that date.

My specialist said that any OEM parts ordered were matched to the car’s VIN, so if the job was recorded properly, I may have a chance, especially if the numbers on the actual injectors are recorded somewhere…

For the sake of a few ‘phone calls, it may be worthwhile…

Yes, they should be, but it's unclear to me if normal practice is to record "injector part number, x6", or to explicitly include the serial numbers of those exact ones.

As you say, well worth some digging.

You might have had a chance of the dealer fixing it if you had the paperwork but with the repair already done there's no chance of them giving you anything towards it.

Just thinking the same, surely the contract is between the original owner and dealer, I doubt you have a leg to stand on

Quick update:

I’ve had the full service/repair history from the eBay bloke (very good service, by the way), and there’s a mysterious repair from 2022, but with no details.

I’ve asked my specialist if individual parts can be traced, and may give the main dealer a call, but shan’t be busting any guts: I’m just relieved there was no long-term damage to the engine!

There's certainly nothing to lose by giving the dealer a call.
