As part of my purchase deal with Martins (Alpine GT) I had a complimentary Thruxton experience day. I've never been on "track" apart from couple of laps at Bruntingthorpe aerodrome with my TVR Cerbera (which wasn't really involving).
The 2 X 5 laps I did with Harry (instructor) was very enlightening about car control (I thought I was doing quite well) but I have to say the 2 "hot laps" with Harry driving really showed how bloody fast and the speed carried through the corners was just unbelievable. I can now see why taking your car (preferable theirs smile) on track is a great way to see how capable these cars are.

I did Piste Bleu at Goodwood. Really good fun, and the passenger lap(s?) in the racing version were insane. Not sure how much difference was the slicks and how much was the driver.

I did check the track car (Alpine S) tyres, Michelin Sport 4's. They did smell a bit after the instructors 2 laps smile.

Harry Rice is a great instructor and will let you push on if he's reasonably confident you'll not kill him! Charlotte and Murray (Shepard of Goodwood Revival fame) are also brilliant, although Murray doesn't seem to be in the Alpines as much.

I think the Alpine 1-2-1 sessions are the best thing Thruxton do - look out for their Black Friday deals.

I'm going to book the Alpine experience soon as it sounds like a great experience and a safe way of understanding the cars full capabilities. Is there anything I should be aware of before I book? For example, can you request a session with a standard car rather than the S. I've looked on the website and it suggests the S is the only option but shows standard cars in the pictures.

They used to have both but not sure if they still do - can only really see what's there on the day - as noted above book 121 having bought a black friday voucher

I think they use 's' for the 1-2-1s.

If you book a supercar experience (nothing like as dire as it sounds, but don't bother with the single seaters...) you get three laps in an Alpine and I think they are base model cars, but check first if its important to you. Give them a ring, they're quite accomodating!

I've done the 1-2-1 twice with former Porsche Carrera Cup champion Mark Cole as instructor - he's very accommodating (and a brilliant instructor) if he knows you're not just a birthday dad.

It went something like:

1 demo lap Instructor

6 laps (somehow became 7) in a Pure (he offers the S if you want to jump straight in it)
6 - 7 laps in an S

Demo lap by instructor.

Mark would happily swap the demo lap for more laps for you. However the demo lap was something else!

A great way of learning Thruxton and getting a feel of the car before doing your own track days. I went just before a trip to Spa and it was a great refresher.

I did it courtesy of Martins a couple of Fridays ago with instructor Dave who was very good. Ended with two hot laps. I don’t treat my car like that! Well, not regularly anyway…

Ha! Sorry

I got 90% the time before - I must be getting slower! (Obvs this is not to be taken too seriously!)
