Sometimes You Just Cant Shift Them

It has to be at least six months since we first commented on this ex Tony Pond Chevette and still no sale . I wonder had it been an ex Roger Clark Escort whether it would have hung around this long ? Many of us have no doubt been there when no matter how hard you try you just cant seem to shift them . That said as far as I can remember the vendor doesn't seem to have reduced his asking price so he doesn't appear desperate . It must be a very limited marketplace in full Rally Trim even for a Vauxhall Enthusiast . In road going trim I believe selling her would be an entirely different proposition . I cant remember the last time I saw one on the road .

I’m not sure Roger’s name has quite the cachet, you may think it has, Ari Vatenan, Hannu Mikkola or Björn Waldegård, maybe. I’m not saying Roger wasn’t a great, driver just that time moves on.
I’m sure most of us know who Tony Pond is, ask any rallying enthusiast under 40 the same question?
I wouldn’t call the think end of £80,000 giving it away, in fact a set of tyres, shy of £90,000. While I’m sure it would make a great historic rally contender, so do a lot of other equally capable cars.
A lot of its value will be determined by its provenance and competition history. What’s it worth, who knows, what’s someone willing to pay, that’s a different matter.
I once read, that a Ford Escort (albeit one of two in black) an ex kindergarten teacher used to drive, fetched over half a million quid, while a low mileage RS1800 only went for £280,000.

Think you summed it up correctly, either its priced to high or the seller is not fussed about selling. I would not mind owning that and doing the odd "invitation" event like Goodwood, Shelsley classic etc, but then it would really need trailering, so a tow vehicle, trailer etc.It has to be at least six months since we first commented on this ex Tony Pond Chevette and still no sale . At my age now, i cant be arsed with all that palaver, a Nice Hawk Cobra that you can drive to and from events tickles my fancy more these days

Building a replica you’re probably not going too far of the price of the original, it’s the upper end of five figures (a lot of money to most people) not six.
Unless it goes to a museum it doesn’t make a lot of sense for a private collector/investor, it’s not of that much historical significance, to appreciate in value.

Ex Russell Brookes, works Sunbeam Lotus.

Image above, looks like Roger Clark to my eyes.

My brother nearly bought this, an ex ‘Noel Edmonds, Avon Tour of Britain’ car, that was around 50 years ago and it was a bit of a ‘triggers broom’ back then.
A quick gander of the historic rally scene, suggests quite a few originals are still being used today, like back in the day ‘bin them, rebuild them’ its accepted practice.

This is only going to appeal to a UK buyer, as the DTV Chevette's were UK Championship only IIRC, I don't recall them ever having the budget to contest any non-UK events, as the limited budget came from the UK dealer network, so there was never any benefit to doing non-UK events.
While great cars in their day, parts supply is a problem, due to the small numbers of rally cars built, and small numbers of road cars built, and no huge motorsport budget......so there just isn't the demand from serious historic rally competitors, when there are better easier to run options available.
This is only going to appeal to a collector with a memory of these DTV Chevette's who has a deep pocket.......so, no surprise its still for sale at the price it is. Drop it 20k and it might find a collector buyer?
This was the car Pony retired on SS10 of the '82 RAC Rally with severe accident damage.
