Not sure if this is in the right forum - apologies if not...
Sold an item on eBay
Buyer then claims its not what I sent them (a warming drawer) and send picture of an identical model but old and knackered.
eBay advise me to accept the return
Return arrives and is an old knackered warming drawer.
eBay now telling me that unless they can show the buyers account is dodgy in some way I am likely to have to refund.
Any advice??

All you can do it send ebay pictures of the item received back to prove its not the one you listed.
Ideally one of the pictures in the listing was of the plate with the serial number on it?
That doesn't prove anything.Ideally one of the pictures in the listing was of the plate with the serial number on it?
The buyer is claiming that they were sent the old knackered one, which was not what was advertised. Proving that what they returned is not what was advertised is pretty much what the buyer claims anyway.
Unless the OP has some way of proving what was sent - which is probably not possible - then they're screwed.
Sadly have heard of this on other sales, and the people pulling this scam are proper scumbags.
I'm not sure how much proof you can provide. I mean if eBays argument is, "your photos are of this but you must have sent that" there literally seems no way to stand up for yourself. Even if you'd marked the item with a UV pen or something, they'd still argue that wasn't the item you sent.

Advertised a non working solar panel inverter on Ebay and made it clear it was not working and for parts only. Chappie sent me a reply saying he'd buy it for £100 and was aware not working and paid me the money to ebay. He's a Polish lorry driver and comes to UK regularly in his artic and would pick it up. Duly arrived at my house and collected it. Three days later I get a dispute from Ebay saying it's not working and they'd refunded the money to him from my account. Despite me showing them his message acknowledging it wasn't working, they wouldn't side with me and took the money out of my account.

Ebay are pretty decent now they are competing with Vinted more. You just have to get past the AI bots and speak to a person. They typically refund the seller and the buyer (i.e. take the hit). if in doubt, post on the Reddit Ebay forum and someone will walk you through. You'll never win with ebay

Looks like the OP had a rare win, with a lot of aggro. You'll never win with ebay
I hope buyers are aware they are paying " Buyer Protection " included in the price advertised ? They have just moved the fees from seller to buyer, the protection is debatable lol.

Result, first time I've ever heard ebay do that!
Can only assume the buyer is a prolific scammer and has a few hits recorded against him already and ebay have actually seen sense

UPDATE
Just had a call from eBay - without breaching any data laws, they've looked into it and suffice to say the buyers had their account closed and the claim has been rejected.
Many thanks to Rob @ eBay.
That's great news; how did you get them to change their mind?Just had a call from eBay - without breaching any data laws, they've looked into it and suffice to say the buyers had their account closed and the claim has been rejected.

I've had a couple of 'professional complainers' who left me negative feedback and comments that were complete lies. I got them both removed by invoking eBay's libel policy which (presume because they're American) they take seriously.

I've got a decent amount of 100% positive feedback, the scammer had around 100. The eBay guy said he'd have a good look into it. reading between the lines they've established the buyer was trying it on as they've been booted off. Very pleasantly surprised.
