I quite fancy an EV as a daily driver and a Taycan seems like a sensible (...) choice given I want an estate.

Are they as unreliable as everyone makes out?

I'd be looking at a Gen 1 Turismo / Cross I guess, around £50k. I wouldn't buy one without an OPC warranty on it.

I would suggest that if reliability is your concern then I’d look at other options. We had 3 ok years and then this year has been constant trips to the OPC and rental cars. I don’t really drive the rental cars, but I take one in the off chance that it encourages them to get a move on, which it doesn’t.

The car is great, but our suffers from niggling minor issues relating to how complex modern stuff is and also the constant ‘chassis failure.’ This is nothing to do with it being an EV, but issues with the air suspension or the ‘loose sensor cables’ that the thing suffers with. I’m guessing that the OPC is banned from using cable ties.

Going into an OPC is clearly only an experience for retired people. The amount of faff being sat down then having to wait for an admin person, who has no concept of time whatsoever. I could go on, but I’d suggest having another look at the classifieds. Filter by the specification of car you wish to drive rather than brand.

Fine if you're buying from OPC as you'll get a warranty. And don't forget to extend it before it runs out. My '22 GTS has been awful. Unfortunately I'm stuck with it for another year due to the depreciation. The list of issues, so far:

NSR door mechanism replaced (wouldn't unlock and open)
Driver's display replaced (display was flickering)
Full PCM unit replaced (unit kept crashing)
High voltage Heater replaced (no hot air)
22kw on board charger replaced (car was bricked during charging)
NSR door handle replaced (proximity sensor fault, caused comfort entry to be disabled)
NS charge port fault(wouldn't unlock plug, had to use manual override to release)
Loss of remote app functions (needed a 2 day reset at the dealership)

All of that on top of the continued software niggles like blank screens (which can take anything from 15mins-overnight to resolve), random faults that need a shutdown and restart.

As a daily it's an amazing car to drive, comfortable and silent and perfect for a commute. Just wish it was reliable.

At the risk of jinxing things badly, but for some balance...

I have a 22 GTS ST. Have done the thick end of 25k miles in it.

The pano roof developed a crack. Replaced under warranty (part ordered while I kept using the car, swapped out in 2 days. Porsche loaner for that duration).

The brakes were subject to a campaign to sort pedal feel.

And that's broadly it. (Oh, a prong in the cupholder broke - warranty decision took longer than it did to fix myself).

It's been a brilliant car thus far. Brilliant. Love it. Replaced my 911 and B7 RS4. No regrets.

One comment - it's estate shaped, but don't expect to get a wardrobe in it! For the external size it's not exactly the tardis smile

I've got a 2020 4S, bought with 25k miles, now on 50k miles. Other than a creaking drivers seat base I've had zero issues. I love my Taycan, nothing else I'd rather have for my use case.

I bought a 2020 Turbo S in Feb 25 from an OPC.

The only issue I've had is the charger flap issue when you leave it plugged in for more than couple of days. But there's a simple reset method on Youtube.

Fantastic cars apart from;

- they are pretty bloody wide
- interior space is lacking oddly considering the external size
- slow/dated infotainment, eg carplay takes a while to start
- a few more rattles and squeaks than I expected

I wouldn't have bought one without an OPC warranty, and I pcp'd it so it could be handed back at the end if necessary.

I would 100% replace it with another one come change time.

I had a 4S Sport Turismo from 2022 on lease, just handed back. Fantastic car with no problems whatsoever. Am now leasing BMW I4 M50, Nowhere near the quality or comfort but almost as fast in everyday use, narrower & half the price to lease. Still miss the Taycan

I think I was a bit negative in my post. Sometimes a rant is needed. I did drive the car today and it reminded my that it s nice and handles well. The only time it doesn t handle well is a fast entry into a tight turn, when the understeer is significant. Aside from that it can carve up most roads.

On the Facebook group I was shot down for suggesting that it was a bad idea to spec electric charge flaps and comfort access, but the passage of time has confirmed that these two options will go wrong at some point. I’ve never found it uncomfortable to press a button to open a car personally, but it must be a terrible inconvenience for some and so they will pay Porsche a bit extra to avoid getting thumb ache?!

I got a message on my app telling me to book in for a pre-emptive change, all done in one day.

Love my Taycan GTS, does a lot of things really well!

Booked in for next Tuesday now, apparently my car is due 6 recalls including the heater. Only one for the brakes was showing in the app!

Thanks chaps. That s reassuring, I think.

Re: heaters, a big part of me wanting to go EV is the possibility to remote heat the thing as often I leave the house very early in the morning and in the winter being able to defrost the car while I m having breakfast is a huge bonus. My Range Rover is great for that. Am I right in saying the heaters should be replaced with a more reliable unit so, in theory, if it s been replaced it shouldn t fail again?

Speaking of Range Rovers, it seems the Taycan experience is similar: some people have no problems and love them and others have no end of issues and hate them!

I’ve had my turbo 2 years. Apart from onboard charger it’s been the best car I’ve ever owned. Love it. I’d buy a gen 2 but because of depreciation nobody is speccing the cool stuff anymore. My gen 1 was a Porsche manager’s car so great spec.

Heaters were a campaign item - most should have the better quality part now. If buying from a dealer all of their stock should (but ask them about any car you're interested in).

Note that initiating the remote heating/cooling needs Connect services. These are only free for the first 3yrs of ownership. It's a few hundred a year thereafter.

GTS ST here. Just approaching two years old and 36k miles.

Heater been replaced.

It's epic although I do seem to go through tyres quite quickly yikes

Putting price aside as at £50k they are excellent value for money.

I have a 2023 Turbo S I have had from new which replaced a 2021 4S which I also had from new. The 4S had a few niggles to begin with, the heater being one of them, but it was always sorted quickly and with no fuss - my 4S was one of the first really, you didn't see many around and I accepted the niggles because it was new and it was bound to happen.

Apart from a recall to sort out a potential brake issue (which was sorted before it became an issue) I have had absolutely no problems whatsoever with the Turbo S, it's been a dream from the beginning. They are quite spec sensitive IMO i.e. the standard seats/dash would look out of place in a bloody Dacia, never mind a Porsche of it's price but upgraded leather makes it a nice place to be. The standard sound system is awful so look for Bose at the very least, I had Bose in my first and now have Burmester, both are good.

Other than that, as others have said make sure you have a warranty and maybe accept the fact you may have to forgive it some niggles and you can't go far wrong. A lot of car for £50k.
