Hi PHers - weird question.

We are returning to Croatia next year and have agreed to pay our host directly for a week of accommodation (we stayed last year, Airbnb and we were his first guests). It isn't something we would normally do for obvious reasons but we know the host and this is simply a transaction that benefits both as we both save on Airbnb fees and costs,. However, I can't take out £3000 cash when we get there as far as I know, and any bank transfer made here would incur tax/fees according to him. Therefore the only way I can think of to make it work is to take out the money here in Euros and take it with me. But then, will I not get asked a the airport why I am carrying a st load of cash in an envelope? We are travelling through Austria and Italy first and getting plan, train and boat so it will be going on quite a journey,

Is there a better solution?

It used to be more than £10k in and out of the UK before questions were asked. Obviously check the destination country's rules too.

Pre load a travel card with the relevant amount and give him the card / pin, his problem to get the cash, etc.

Dunno what you are worrying about, I leave for the Algarve on Wednesday with more than 2k in euros!

Likewise, my landlady requests a cash payment.

Surely £3000 won't cause any issues? Especially if you split it between you.

I had the exact same thing just last week, though for a far smaller amount smile paying a hotel in Thailand directly instead of booking. com taking half the money as commission.

Have a look at Wise. cheaper than most bank transfers, instant payment, reasonable exchange rate.

The hotel gave us their Thai bank account details, fed them in, set the amount they were to receive and job done.

Are you sure about that?
Ask your host what the cash limit is at his ATM, you may be surprised.
Here in Cyprus the daily cash limit at an ATM is 3k, on a joint account that's 3k per person, per day.

I am a little hesitant to be worrying about can I take out cash there, and what if I can't or there is an issue e.t.c. I want it to be confirmed and sorted well before I go. I am happy to take cash if needs be with me. Travel card / deposit accounts, will look into those.

I'm in Croatia at the moment - cash machines charge about £5 (or maybe 5 euro) for a cash advance and withdrawals seem to be limited to about £200 a day. There will be card FX & cash withdrawal fees on top of that.
I guess that you could bring a few CCs

You'll likely need cash day-day too. About 50% of bars and restaurants won't take a card. That say 'government' when I ask why.

They likely want actual physical cash to avoid declaring for tax.

Plus Paypal also take a cut of the payment and most customers get upset when you say "That's €3,000 for cash or €3,150 for Paypal".

You’d both save the Airbnb fees if you do a bank transfer……

But if I just transfer an amount to a person isn't it just a tiny transaction fee?
