Getting the itch to maybe move on from my 428i GC and these look very good to me. But are they just a poor imitation of a genuine M2? Thoughts of owners welcome.

I think that M2 is a future classic and if you can, you should.

I'm tempted but the idea of £1k warranty or a £1k bill for something minor gives me the fear.

It's not an M2 so you have to look at it as a different car.

My wife has had a 2016 M240i Auto for several years now. She loves it.

  • Sized and looks of a modern day E30, Plenty of space up front but rear isn't overly spacious.
  • Drives nicely, the engine and gearbox are really well matched
  • Sounds nice
  • Fast (for reference we also have a 640d and a 911 GTS).
  • Economical - 36mpg over our time although a lot of the mileage is motorway
  • Has been cheap to run
To try a 2 series when buying we took a 230i out. Quite rightly, my wife asked why we needed something faster than that. It's not just the speed. The car feels so much more grown up, smoother, more premium with the 6 cylinder engine. Obviously faster but just as economical.

The caveat would be moving from a 4 GC is the ride will likely be more jiggly, everything a little more urgent. When you accelerate hard in the 240 it does get a bit squirmy.

If these are the characteristics you are after then it is a great car.

I had one until a couple of years ago and traded it in for an F82 M4. I really enjoyed my M240i, still miss it now sometimes. I had it three years mine was a manual, if I was to get another i'd probably go for an auto now and wouldn't have the ivory interior again because it was a pain to keep clean.

The only issues I had were the drivers door window regulator failing whcih I think was a little under £400 to get repaired by a specialist. and the exhaust valve actuator which failed and cost me about £1000 at a main dealer.

I did enjoy the car and wondered for a while if I had made a mistake getting rid of it, if I was to get another i'd probably have an LSD fitted, that's the only thing they really miss.

You will notice they are a fair bit smaller inside than the 4 series, I can have rear passengers in my M4 but it wasn't realistic in the 2 series, me being 6ft 4.

Seats are nice in the M240i, the dash etc is probably the same as a standard 1 series. I would say Pro Nav and HK sound are a must.

It's not trying to imitate the M2. Nobody mistakes a 240i for an M2, otherwise they need glasses.

In common with most, if not all 'M lites', the standard M sport suspension is garbage, otherwise pretty decent cars. The F30 340i drives better imo, or is that imitating the F80 too much for your liking? lol

Your 428 has the capacity to throw you a large bill too. If the M2 is what you want then I'd say go for it. Underwrite the first year by buying used approved or get a PPI done by a specialist.

And if you still need convincing, have a look through the forums at some of the dreary "safe choice" cars that have landed their owners with big bills.

My 428i has actually been exemplary, one of the most reliable cars I’ve ever owned. Sure wear and tear and maintenance hasn’t been cheap with £763 for four tyres in Feb 2023 a particular highlight, but the only real fault it’s had is an automatic headlight level sensor only just this month and I’ve had it for over four years now. I do run the BMW warranty on it but have a £250 excess and I’ve never used it and I’m now into the third year of it.

I've always liked them, but my only gripe is how ordinary they look though for me. I've always thought they're very anonymous looking for a performance car.

That's exactly what I like about them - really understated. I'm looking for a 440i but I'd be tempted by an M240i if the right one came up. For me HK audio, Pro Nav and heated seats are must haves. Amazing how scarce these options are on the M240i considering it was the range topping model. I'd have expected those items to be standard!

I've got one, a 2019 model.

Had it 18 months and I think it's great.

It's got all the extras bar H&K sound, but tbh I don't miss it.

It's lowered on Eibach springs, and spacers to fill the arches a tad better.

Looks good in my opinion!

It's a comfortable, quick, daily driver.

I normally start getting bored after 12months or so, but apart from looking at Boxsters and new shape Z4 M40's, I'm more than happy with this.

Would definitely recommend.

Also had one for 2 years.

Worst part was the bouncing suspension after bumps. It took a while to settle.

Most mpg I saw was around 43 ish on a long 70mph run.

Mine was also MG flasher stage 2.5. Downpipe. Hpfp. Run around 480 and 650 or so nm.

With the above traction was an issue until over 40mph though

Overall very good. I miss it sometimes. Swapped It for a cla 220d which I got sold in 3 months as it was so boring and slow compared to it.

A lot were missing spec options which would be desirable because when they were new they were very close to the £40k luxury tax bracket so a lot of initial purchasers skipped options to keep them under £40k

I had a M240i that followed a BMW M4 competition, genuinely preferred it, it was manual and I owned it nearly 4 years

I had it lowered and remapped after a year ownership, put approx 40k miles on it, hard miles, only thing I had to spend money on was a clutch outside of servicing and tyres.

I took it to germany, absolute beast on the autobahn, the B58 engine is incredible.

The only thing it lacks against the M2C/M4 is the engine response and road presence. The reason I mention engine response is because it literally replaced the M4.

428i to M240i will feel like heaven

The lack of LSD and 460bhp/470 lbft was never an issue, of course if you ripped the clutch pulling out of a junction or in the wet, yes you'll have issues however I always had it in S+ and loved it.

Heres me ripping the clutch on mine, I miss that car, I only sold it because I was offered a 60mpg hybrid company car, for my 30 mile round trip commute, it had to go

I've had a 2016 M240i manual for two years now. Curiously, the only issues I've had have been exactly the same: both window regulators and the exhaust valve actuator, both replaced under warranty (BMW Approved Used).

I rate the car, but I'm looking to sell it in favour of an F31 340i Touring. I enjoy the M240i manual, but I spend more time in traffic than 'driving' these days, and the practicality of an estate is appealing for loading bicycles.

Having the Pro Nav in my 428i I don't think I could drop down to 'poverty' nav on the small screen. Agree about the heated seats too.

Exactly why I binned off a manual in favour of the ZF8 auto. It's a game changer in heavy traffic.
