I have a 997.1 Carrera 2 manual. Long term car, transitioned from daily --> mint "highdays and holidays" treat.

A few weeks ago I bought a 2009 E92 manual 325i. It's utterly fabulous - brilliant engine, decent build quality, comfortable but not wallowy, great seats, practical, solid feeling, oodles of luggage space. But not so special it would make a touring holiday 'special'.

Set me thinking . . . M3? Which flavour M3 (or other 'M') is most up the grand tourer, rather than track focused, end of the spectrum? Pleasure for European and UK touring, but still a little bit magic?

We recently traded in our Golf R estate for a M340i touring, this is our first BMW and it is (imo) absolutely superb. It’s not an M3 but the engines a belter, fuel economy is great and it has plenty of room for all of my wifes and dogs holiday kit!
I’m sure you’d be able to find one within budget to suit your needs.

I have the e92 comp. And it ticks many boxes, keep meaning to sell it , but struggle to find something close which isn’t three times the price

You can get a nice F82 M4 for your budget. Left in comfort mode it’s more than capable as a tourer and then swap the modes with the M buttons configured when you want to start having some fun.
An F80 M3 would be just as capable but they tend to be over your budget for a nice one.

I think they get a little more capable as all rounders with each new model. I've just done Germany and back in my E90 and it was a dream to be in but the F80/F82 will offer a little more tech and comfort when needed. Plus a good increase in fuel economy!
