Hi everyone

What do you think of the Freelander 2, especially in its Petrol ULEZ compliant guise? And has anyone driven the 2.0 turbo Ford engined variant that they sold in other markets?
I live in the Cotswolds and London and thought this would be a great all round car.
Any insights would be much appreciated

I think the 2.5 v6 is meant to be reliable but thirsty with a road tax bracket to match.

We had 3 diesel FL2s when they were new and loved them. Great all rounder and we had zero problems. I'd still have one now if it wasnt for the ulez nonsense. I browsed the petrol V6 version on Autotrader recently, but the high tax bracket and terrible fuel consumption ruins the appeal for me.

For the freelander 2.

You have the 3.2 Volvo engine. Which is 07-11 or so and rather uncommon now. There’s 9 on Autotrader.

I would go as new as possible.

The later 2.0 I ve no experience or heard anything about it really.
Don’t think it s a uk standard model. So could be a jap import or such.

I it doesn’t need to be ulez then the 2.2 is the one to go for and very reliable

If you don’t need ULEZ.

Get a SD4 automatic. Again as late as you can. 2013-14 era in hse, hse Luxury or metropolis spec.
The last 2 are basically the best specs you can have.

We have a 2014 metropolis. Had it nearly 5 years and it’s genuinely the most reliable car I’ve had.
Sitting on 155k and I see no reason it won’t go past 200k+ in our ownership.

I say get the higher specs because the overwhelming majority of parts that fail on them. Are shared between base model and top specs.

Rear shocks, wheel bearings, rear arch rust, door actuators and boot releases.

Get the auto box serviced, same with the haldex and get the power steering fluid flushed.
Otherwise, general maintenance will keep them happy.

The 3.2 Volvo unit or the 2.2 SD4 (if ULEZ not a requirement)... As late as possible and with the auto.

Thanks for all your help, really useful to know.
In the end I bought a Japanese import with the Ford 2.0 204PT Turbo engine.

It’s ULEZ, does 40mpg, and 350 a year road tax.
It’s also about 236 HP so, fun to drive too!
