hey,

if i were, hypothetically of course, needing to reverse trace a mobile telephone number that had been making contact, how would i go about it? i know the number, i know the number is on vodafone, and i know its a pay as you go contract. i have tried the normal methods and as yet they have been unable to help due to standard restraints.

if anyone has any thoughts, id really appreciate an email.

many thanks gang,

Phone them up from a different number they won't recognise and ask them who they are?

Not sure you as an individual can do what you are suggesting legall though or without a court order.

What do you need to know - the caller's name?

Isn't it easiest to call the number and ask them who they are? Of get someone else to do it?

The network operator/authorities won't necessarily know the name of a PAYG customer.

just the name will do. i plan to get someone else to call later, i just wondered if there was another way anyone had tried? i remember on here a few months ago there was a link to a site that could show exactly where the phone was at that time. anyone know of one of those?

GSM location is a subscription thing I think, the phone owner would need to elect for that service.

Personally I'd mask the outbound line (141) and just ask for a random name as if you were a call centre.

Most people when asked 'Hello, is that Mr Johnson' will respond with 'No, Mr Davies' or whathaveyou.

I say 'No, sorry I think you have the wrong number' - I suspect I am not alone in this.

Just saw this from on eof those sites:
"Note: Before you can locate a mobile the owner of the phone needs to grant you permission via text."

still seems easy to circumvent if it is a person that trusts you! I could easily grab my freinds / co-workers phones and send this place a text while they are out of the room. Delete the text from their phone and they will be none the wiser and you will always know where they are! Scary.
