Sounds like an exhaust leak on one cylinder to me.

Do you know how to open the bonnet?

Might help with diagnosis.

Looking at the engine with a camera won't get a better diagnosis. I did write, it's coming from the left side of engine rather than the right side. The noise is exactly the same with bonnet open but using the camera next to the engine doesn't pick up the exact noise as to what you can hear in the video posted which is more accurate.

I think the point they are making is that it would help to see the layout of the engine, ie is the left hand side where the noise is coming from the side where the serpentine belt is?

It sounds from the speed of the ticking like one of the pulleys around the serpentine belt if that is the side where the noise is coming from, it sounds too slow to be a tappet etc, but ultimately no one will be able to diagnose what the fault is from a noise, you need to take it to a garage for them to examine.

Okay, I don't even know with the bonnet open as it's a very compacted engine. You can't see much. So on camera they'd not narrow it down.

In 15 years I've fixed my own cars. I don't do garages sadly, for them. Just get an idea online or via diagnostics and dig in.

I'm getting a bit of a fumes smell from the engine bay so, I think I'm going to locate the exhaust manifold and exhausts pipe work underneath one day soon to see if there's a failure there.

I disagree 100% but hey ho, feel free not to bother.

I won't bother trying to help you if you can't be bothered to either.

cameras can be very helpful.

Leaking injector seals can be quite common, each has a discharge port just above the exhaust manifold. Look, or use a camera to look for residue from them.

Hard to determine anything from that video though

So I've since posted the same video on a owners forum who all use the same car and 8 people have all said it's the injector seals common on bank 3 or 6 or both.

They even sent me videos of theirs with the exact same noise. So it does seem it's the injector seals and I'll tackle it tomorrow.

A camera/video from under the bonnet would likely have brought that suggestion up days ago.

Just sayin' wink

I wasn't a million miles off with exhaust leak then, it is a cylinder air leak, but from the injector, not exhaust.

I have a couple of leaky injector seals on my A6 Allroad - need to get them sorted.

My pal recently did all 6 on his Q7 and performed an ultrasonic clean of the injectors - transformed the car, 5mpg better afterwards and much quieter.

You need to ensure the 'correct' genuine Audi seals, there are some dodgy fake ones out there suposedly.

Well, I've changed all injector washers with some off eBay and the o rings as well made by febi bilstein off eBay too and did the job myself. When the injectors were out I have them a light scrub with a brass brush.

Everything now running smoothly again.

So injector leak was the culprit

Usually you need to re-cut the seats too, just very lightly to ensure they're clean. But it's a pretty straightforward job on them.
