I was driving along the A413 yesterday and was overtaken by a group of about 10 - 12 bikers all on proper motorbikes (rather than electric bikes). There was not one visible rear number plate amongst the entire group. On some of the bikes you could see that there was a plate, but it was horizontal so none of the relevant information could be seen. As you would expect, the standard of riding and overtaking was diabolical.

I wonder what they do if they see a police car. Can they flip the plate down whilst riding, or do they just ride off into the sunset being fairly confident that the police aren't going to catch them?

A number plate infringement only attracts a fine and no points.

They just roll the dice and hope no cops get behind them.

They push it down with their foot, I've seen it done.

Years ago I was driving through the M25 toll when a completely white painted bike went through in the next lane. Its number plate read :
fk
YOU

Pick any of the videos from the results list and compare them to the bikes you saw.

Witnessed some of the GVO bikes heading in to London going through red lights, guessing most will be uninsured/offroad only, wonder how many of them are also stolen?

Not the right answer.

Many are probably stolen/uninsured.

Nine points on their licence (If they have one) will make them think twice.

Why? the toll for the Dartford crossing for a motorcycle is £0.

I'm no expert on motorbikes but these were what I would describe as "Sports Bikes" - things between 600cc & 1000cc, definitely road bikes with little or no off-road capability. A Suzuki GSX type of thing.

How should I know why the rider chose to do that, it was 15 years ago at least.

ETA: apparently it used to be 40p for motorcycles.

I've seen half sized plates on loads of bikes. Usually it is for aesthetic reasons as standard size plates apparently look pants. It doesn't help that motorcycle manufacturers seemingly add crappy plate hangers as an afterthought. Aftermarket hangers are pretty expensive - mine was about £90 with a standard size plate. Many riders don't want to spend that sort of ££ so basically bodge it.
I also heard of someone who simply removed his plate, rendering speed & ANPR cameras pointless. If local councils continue to lower speed limits, I can see car drivers removing numberplates becoming more widespread...

You nor anyone else knows anything about the legal status of these motorcycles regarding them being possibly stolen or uninsured yet you are happy to make assumptions . Not content with that now you are advocating nine points for not displaying a rear number plate on a bike?? Never mind at least if you are on here then your wife is being given a break from your stupidity

We know one thing: none were compliant with number plate regs.

Wacky made their post very clear: the additional points would come from the likely additional offences- not sure how you got that wrong?

Where there's smoke there's fire, and if you think these bikers are going to ride round like saints and it's pure "coincidence" they choose not to show number plates, then i have a bridge to sell you.

I've had my category A for decades, so can say with confidence when these guys get it wrong it will be them paying the price.

Apart from them hiding the numberplate.

Full size plates dont last long on an enduro bike if its being used properly.
Gave up and got a bendy small one after breaking and losing 3 full size legal ones, never had a problem since.

It's a logical solution

99% of traffic law enforcement is done with cameras

So now they only have to worry about the 1%

I can't recall what the penalty is for no numberplate but I know it isn't a ban which is what these riders could get every ride if they had a plate on display

I have a 3/4 sized plate on the front of my old Land Rover. A friendly Policeman told me it was a lesser offence to have no plate at all.
