A few years back NR interviewed an American open wheel (I think) racing driver who had had a bitter rivalry with another racer in Motorsport magazine. They may have come to blows at least once. However, at some point the other racer had caught a slide and the driver being interviewed had raised a finger off the steering wheel in acknowledgment of his skill. Asked why by Roebuck, he said that even though they were rivals he had to recognise his skill and that even now few drivers in the world could have done it.

I have searched the Motorsport magazine archive online as a subscriber but with no luck. I either get thousands of hits or none. If anyone can remember which issue contained this interview I would love to hear it.

As it's Nigel Roebuck his friend and go to Mario Andretti springs to mind. I'm guessing it's to do with Andretti's rivalry with AJ Foyt who ended up respecting each other.
