I’ve been looking at buying a car, and the car it’s self looks immaculate. 2017 plate 52.8k miles and it looks the best in a great condition and looks to be very well taken care of.

We ran an rac check on it just for peace of mind and it came back with a mileage discrepancy.
02 july 24 - vosa - 43238
5th dec 24 - vosa - 15841
18 July 25 - nmr 50000
(Mileage before these are in line with mot history)

However on the dvla check and auto trader check, it doesn’t show this at all. It goes straight from
2 July 24- mot - 43238
27 aug 25 - mot - 52888

Can someone help me understand why this would be reading differently? If I hadn’t done the rac check, I would have used looked at autotrader and dvla history but now the rac check has made me anxious about it being clocked.

The dec 24 reading of 15841 just seems to be out of the blue and doesn’t fit with the mot history.
I’m checking with the trader about service history too, but he’s only got a few that arent giving me much information.

Any advice?

Looks like a typo. The 1 and 4 are even next to each other on a normal keypad layout.

That’s what we thought too.
I’ve contacted the trader again to ask for more information and want to try to do some more digging and see if i can get it the bottom of it before making a decision.

It’s the first time I’ve bought a car worth more than 2k so i just want to be sure I’m not buying one that’s been tampered with.

It's almost certainly a mistake either entering the wrong information at the time of the MOT or else a corruption later on. I wouldn't put me off if the rest of the car checked out.

Surely it doesn’t matter? Any hint of a discrepancy I would just walk it’s not worth the worry when you haven’t bought it.

Seems like a typo, I've had similar myself on history checks. It wouldn't concern me.

Understandable, and that’s what i was inclined to do. Partly, i just really want to know how the discrepancy has occurred and why it’s not reflective of the mot history, but also just want to triple check it’s not a mistake in inputting numbers before i turn it down and miss out on the car.

But on the other hand, you seem happy with how well the car has been kept and would be a shame to pass over it for what might be an innocent mistake, so worth digging a little deeper imho.

(Also have to confess to not actually knowing what exactly 'VOSA' is in this context as it ceased being an entity back in 2014.)

Was very happy until the report came back with this issue, it runs really well and looks great, exactly what i wanted and for a fair price.
The trader is happy to send me past service history documents and mot certificates so will be looking into it more for sure. My dad (who’s not a car fanatic, but knows a little bit) said he’s leaning towards it being an inputting error and not clocking, base on the condition and the mot history etc, but we want to be sure before ease either turn it down or buy it.

The whole vosa and nmr thing is what’s thrown us actually. I’m not even sure how to check on this random 15k reading without any documentation or evidence that it ever happened

Nmr = no mileage registered? So just an estimate from previous usage.

Possibly at change of registered keeper on the V5c. Entering the vehicle mileage is optional.

Then I wouldn't worry about it.

Which is more likely?

Someone made a typo on one entry out of all the history you've seen, or someone decided to clock the car back to an implausible low mileage and then also do 34,000 miles in the seven months immediately after, magically ending up at a mileage that aligns with what you'd expect?

National Mileage Register, iirc. I think it's a voluntary thing where you can upload a mileage. Given the round number it might have come from an advert.
