Guys'n'gals, had my Honda Civic for 11 years and generally been very trouble free.

Tonight, I hear some strange noises from the rear passenger wheel and when I get home the wheel is at a slight angle, see photos below.

Never seen this before on any car so will take it in to a garage but intrigued what it could be? Totally screwed? Suspension? Rear axle gone?

Any of the above. It is not safe to drive like that, and if you try then (a) you could end up making things a lot worse, and (b) if something goes horribly wrong as you're driving there then the worst case scenarios could leave you in legal trouble. If you are a member of any roadside assistance services, see if they will recover it to your preferred garage - next option is ask whether the garage can collect it, third option is to contact any local transport company and ask them to deliver it to the garage.

Only had it once on an MR2 that wasn't that old, it had been fitted with TTE suspension by the dealer and a bolt on the upper arm had come loose.

Thanks, I've contact my local guy who has looked after it and his response was exactly the same as yours. Thinks it could be anything from ball joints or the axel has gone but he can't be sure until he sees it. The wheel on the other side is OK though.

However I'll give my local low loader a call tomorrow and getting it taken down to him.

Thanks again for the speedy response.

Maybe have a look at the other side of the wheel - https://www.reddit.com/r/AskMechanics/comments/1k4...
Older car admittedly.

Broken spring would be my first guess, but as above it could be one of many things & shouldn't be driven like that.

Do you have breakdown cover?

If so, get them out in the first instance or a mate that does their own spannering for a first look-see.

The 8th Gens are getting to an age where snapper rear beams due to rust is really not uncommon.

You can get new beams on Ebay for not absurd amounts of money; I would take extreme care for the time being though - It's usually the case that people will jack them up to see what's going on and the whole thing comes to bits

I worked with a guy that had a Civic on which the axle failed, when it went the rear wheel was sat inwards exactly like the picture. And the mad bugger still drove it six miles home!

Just had an update from the garage and the rear axel has corroded after 17 years and 160,000 miles.

I’m unsure what that says about the MOT which was performed 3 months ago.

Awaiting costs and will go from there.

Thanks again for all the replies and comments.

It says nothing about the MOT apart from that man on that day decided that it was OK.
