Drop-top G-Class returns!

Mercedes confirms the G-Class cabriolet is making a comeback - fingers crossed for a V8...

It would be reasonable to say that convertible SUVs don’t exactly have the best reputation - think Range Rover Evoque and VW T-Roc. But there are one or two that can turn the conventional wisdom on its head. The most obvious examples being Jeeps, Defenders, Suzuki Samurais, that sort of thing.

And don’t forget the Mercedes Benz G-Class. Perhaps because of its origins, it’s always felt appropriate for a soft top to exist. So it did, for the lifetime of both the first and second generation G. There were civilian and military spec cars produced over the years; maybe the messages started to get muddied a tad as the G-Class grew ever more luxurious, but the drop top soldiered on. And on: who can forget the recent Landaulets?

And now the G-Class Convertible is making a comeback. There hasn’t been one yet for the W463 generation, introduced in 2018, maybe with Mercedes simply too busy making a bazillion G63s to think about. But the soft top is definitely coming, Mercedes announcement on the expansion of a product portfolio nothing if not to the point: ‘We’re expanding the family further: a G-Class cabriolet is coming. We’ll be offering the open-top G-Class in almost every market around the world, including the US.’ Along with the teaser image, that’s all we know.

The mention of the US is important, because that seems likely to be a huge market for a drop-top G. Especially if the G63 is offered. Given the old Landaulet only used very senior engines, that must be likely. A convertible G-Class with EQ Technology could be interesting, too. For now all we can do is speculate, though you can rest assured that Mercedes will surely be making a big deal about this one. Here’s a classic V8 for sale, just to get you in the mood…

Never likely to buy one but very happy that things like it still exist.

Also, I had a T-Roc cabrio as a hire car on holiday and other than the drivetrain being a bit crap I really liked it.

Is it just me that can't picture any drop top SUV without the scene in Zoolander before the Gasoline fight immediately coming into my head, including music.

I'd love one of these. While my instinct is to think of convertible SUVs as an abomination, when I actually write out the attributes I'd like our family's second car to have I've basically described an Evoque convertible.

A mate has one of these that he bought new for half price because the dealer couldn’t shift it. I can’t see the appeal but he loves it and it’s now worth 4 times what he paid for it, more in fact than my Scuderia was worth which boggled my mind.
I also regularly see an original no frills 5 door with clear glass in forest green. That I do like.

Yes, embarrassingly this applies to me as well.

Annoying isn't it?!? hehe

Shame this will be blinged up nonsense rather than the airborne one pictured.

Cool in a rather vulgar and crass way, but surely not a drop-top?

Use your imagination and sling a tarpulin across those bars in the back.

It would still be a pick up rather than a convertible though …

Screw a couple of deckchairs into the bed under the tarpaulin then. Honestly, you guys are showing no problem solving ability, one needs a can do attitude.
