Hi Guys,
I’ve just received a letter trying to track me or my Father down regarding a lost insurance/pension. I’ve carried out my due diligence by checking that it isn’t a scam and have contacted the company via details on their website. The complication is that both my father and I shared the same first initial, so they can’t/won’t give me any more information without my Dad’s national insurance number. Sadly, we lost Dad in 2017 and I don’t have any idea on how to find his NI number. Can anyone help? All positive replies will be gratefully received.

Pension or employer paperwork.
Is it on any probate stuff, benefit claims for attendance allowance or whatever he might have got?
NHS records?
ISA?

Provide them with the death certificate, that should be enough to authorise them to talk to you.

It's unlikely that you're going to find the NI number unless you for someone reason kept all his paperwork for the last 8 years.

Before his death, was there any paperwork? Did he have an NHS number? Do have any old tax statements or P60s? Do you personally know his last GP?

Point to note: I noted and kept my late mother’s and my late father’s NI number, it was necessary for social services/benefit help at the time.

Thanks for all responses so far. I did keep some of his paperwork to administer his estate, but after 5 years, I thought we had dealt with everything, so shredded the majority of it. I’m going to have a look over the next few days, just to check that there isn’t a note of it amongst the remaining documents. I feel such a pillock, but this letter has come out of the blue!

Could it be a policy for you that you'd forgotten about?

If not surely there's some other ID they could accept other than just NI number simply because you have the same initials.

No. I called the company this afternoon and they can’t find any reference to my NI number in their records, so it definitely looks like it is something that Dad took out. Apparently, they have been trying to track him down since 2018, so a year after he died, which would explain why I wasn’t sent the letters here as we only redirected the mail for 12 months.

Is there something in your inbox, sent mail or drafts that might have the information.

Letters from DWP that you've scanned in and emailed to someone?

Or, maybe in the folder on your PC where scanned documents are first saved. Or a backup / archive of your PC?

Can you not call the NI number helpline and explain the situation? There seems to be various numbers eg 0300 200 3502 or 0300 200 3500.

Thanks. I did think that if I couldn’t find it amongst the remaining documents that I have, I would give them a call. I’ve had a look tonight at all the letters I wrote to his various pensions and bank accounts and none of them had any reference to his NI number. However, I did find an ISA account number for the organisation that sent me the letter, but they paid out on that account. So, they either want to send me 8 years worth of junk mail or, knowing my luck, they have overpaid me when Dad died and they are going to ask for the money back!

How much commision are the company taking?

I'm sure that there is a government website that can assist and it's probably free

Any of his self assessment tax returns that you have copies of?

Do you have access to his HMRC accounts online still?

Inheritance Tax forms also require NI number - did you fill these out and keep copies?

Update;
Thanks for all of the responses, I spent some time on the computer last night, going through all of the letters I sent to notify anyone/everyone that Dad had died. I did find one that I sent to the company concerned, closing an ISA account of his and, as they replied to me at my home address, there was absolutely no need for them to get another company to search for me, a fact I will be making clear to them when I get back in touch with them next week. In addition, I have today gone through all of the remaining remnants of Dad’s paperwork and have managed to find a statement from his works pension which contained details of his NI number, so I am now sorted.
Thanks to everyone who took the time to try and help me. It is greatly appreciated and highlights all that is good in the PH community.

That's good! I think what I'd have done would be to call his last place of employment and see if they'd be so kind as to give it out.

This should do the job. I run a pension scheme
