Apologies if a thread exists already, search yielded no results.

Has anyone joined a social run club and got some advice of what to look for / what to ask or even how to find one? Internet searches are fruitless

For context I'm in my 30's and want to meet similarly 'young' people, make some new friends now mine are either living abroad or with young families.

No real running experience. Gym (strength) 3-4 times a week plus Padel twice a week. I'd like to get a good base for 5 or 10k running, but not be part of a 'harriers' type club which seem very serious.

TIA for advice

I question what you're searching for if you think 'harriers' (and by that I assume you mean hash house harriers) are "serious". Drinkers with a running problem is entirely appropriate smile

So it's up to you for what you want. My track running club have a few socials and the odd pint after a session but they're 'runners'. Running shops tend to have 'all welcome' runs every week after work. There'll be plenty of groups on FB and the like - a cursory look around me in Reading, there are girls only, yummy mummies, one centred around a food/drink pop up place called Blue Collar, there's one based around a brewery... you get the gist.

I go to a running club in the next town along from me. They've actually moved the starting/meeting point for the twice weekly runs from the leisure centre to a local pub ha ha, because the leisure centre has closed.

Anyway, I've been going on and off due to shift work for about 7 years now. They usually have at least 3 groups a night, ranging from a 10km plus run to one around 5km/6km at a nice slow pace with catch up stops, plus a Couch to 5km every year starting March time.

Found them on Facebook when I was looking for something to do one evening a week to get me out of the house and actually made a load of friends from it and got reacquainted with a guy I knew 20 years ago and have ended up going to loads of concerts with since.

To be honest, the last couple of years I've attended more of their social events (Xmas Do, Summer BBQ etc) than I have actual running nights.

Ahh ok - the ones near me train at a proper track and field and their websites are all about racing etc, it sounds very serious. Some friends were in these when we were at school when they were training for cross country county trials so that may add to me thinking its more serious than social

Thank you! To be honest it's the social side that more appeals now. Other sports I've played dont seem to go beyond the actual sport in terms of social activities.... sadly

I joined one a few years ago. Asked around on a few local FB groups, and had a few replies advising who the local ones are.

Go to your local Parkrun, google it if you're not sure, free 5k run/walk every Saturday 9am in your local park, some people take 17 mins , others take 60 mins, so all levels.
You will get to know people, especially the ones that run a similar time & you will get to know the local running clubs.
