old Clinker renovation

We Have a friend , who on occasions trawl's through the free ads and surprisingly finds some fantastic projects . The 1912 slate bed snooker table a complete restoration was one
another was this Clinker boat . The owner had upgraded and needed to get rid off from the boat yard ASAP .The proviso was " you need to bring a boat trailer"

fed up with timewasters saying they would " stick it on the roof of the car " ..................it weighs 600kg ! He was going to break it up. When I intervened .
managed to get it on a box trailer
a solid boat in need of lots of TLC . that was back in November 15' 4 x 5' 6
So this summer just over a week ago I started to work on her
as she was

the " Heath Robinson" of boat transportation


First job to clean the hull using a pressure washer


3 areas had slight surface damage to the grp ,

these were repaired with Fibreglass gelcoat putty . Also decided to raise the anti fowl line by 3" as the boat was sitting lower in the water as can be seen with the tide marks.
The wood was all rubbed down using 240 grit . It revealed nice solid hardwood underneath,

the exposed wood undersections were treated with Properla super hydrophobic wood coating , its breathable and repels water guaranteed for 10 years

upper sections were rubbed down and repaired



I used clamps and wood glue to close the joins then mixed epoxy resin mixed in with fine powdered mahogany shavings to get the colour

after second coat it looked like this

repeating this process and sanding down with each coat eventually fith coat looked like this

continued along the upper parts of the mahogany and gave three coats of colour and 6 coats of yacht varnish .
never liked the blue coloured deck boards so these were sanded down , with top section coated in coloured mahogany then coated in yacht varnish






new solid brass screws for the seats.
For the front she had no towing pad eye . just a d ring internally


wanted to fit a towing eye and not damage the decking whilst using anchor so bought a eye bolt which was bolted through then a roller for the anchor . This would not fit so used a piece of mahogany to add to the superstructure

once shaped and glued/ bolted to the bow it looks like this

also decided to widen the front compartment and add a larger cover to store the anchor and leaded rope there is also enough space for the buoys

works great for storage and Buoyancy

Now to work on the hull . .................. The cost of marine paint is eye watering !!!applied 2 coats of interprotect primer

decided to raise the anti foul line by 3' as the water line was way above the existing one / Then 3 coats of Navy blue anti foul 037

then above water line two coats of One Up

rubbed down with 240 grade sand paper .
then picked up brand new Tohatsu 9.8hp outboard .& fitted a 3mm brass plate to protect the mahogany transom

I wanted a larger fuel tank and to have it tidied away . So bought a 30litre lank and in stalled it in the front to balance the boat but also utilise the second storage area . This is baffled off from the anchor storage a separate watertight bulkhead compartment


the fuel line runs inside the bilge and exits at the rear .with fuel pump bulb & then carefully drilled into the rear seat to allow the hose to exit without restriction


I then checked the bilge pump connected to 12v battery with a tsunami pump it also has a manual override working perfectly
and have rerouted the battery box and mounted it under the seat bolted in position . Ive still to connect an on/ off switch


The previous owner had a flag installed but had removed the fitting . So I bought a brass fitting & 4' flag pole . Then a good neighbour suggested mounting the pole at an angle to allow the flag to fly better. the problem was these fittings are made with a slight bend i needed to modify it so out came another block of mahogany


now the top coat 3 coats of Toplac plus thinned 10%
then the Stickers arrived at the same time as the flag . as our Son has a turtle and the boat is not built for speed we named it after his turtle ,TACO
,, and the flag ,,,we chose one with a turtle in the coat of arms ............" The Cayman islands red ensign .
Here is the boat today. just waiting on the cleats to arrive
The project has taken exactly 7 days




Then nice sunny day to launch in Poole Harbour
edit and yes bought a proper boat trailer for her

Might be an idea to secure the outboard with a tether. Those attaching clamp screws have been known to back out …. don’t ask etc. Luckily I copped on before the outboard popped off.
thats a good point was thinking of drilling through the transom and fitting a security bolt to secure the engine to the transom dhutch said:

I was going to say, maybe I missed something, but after initially wondering if there was an old boat somewhere under the grp, I have come to the conclusion the title of this thread is just plain wrong.

But I wouldn't describe a top of the line 'Aston grill' Mondeo as being a DB9.

With torrential rain decided to do a more permanent Battery Fix . Was never happy with it taking up seat space in the centre.

cut into the rear bullhead and temporarily installed battery box . will have to open up a bit wider . . Then as the seat will be permanently fixed . The plan is to fibreglass the battery box into position . install battery and using Marine 8 & 12 AWG UL 1426 tinned wire install two secondary terminals for connection of CTEK charger when the boat is on dry land.
other electrical fittings .
Battery cut off switch marine grade
Waterproof 6 terminal Fuse box with negative busbar.
USB and switch board
LED lights hidden under the bullhead ...for midnight fishing.
This will allow me to wire the Tsunami pump via 10 amp fuse neatly and access fuse box without taking panels apart . I have some nice White plastic board to make a cover to hide these fittings,
Also took measurements for seat covers.
Discovered two things ........if you are making seat covers 2" thick never mention these are going on a boat ... vendors seem to raise the prices exorbitantly .
Foam !! .......... when did seat foam become so expensive .. After trawling the internet and being quoted silly prices . for 3 pieces . 120cm x 110cm 133cm x 137cm 155cm x 20cm ..... was quoted £560 !! . All of which would need to be cut to size.
I looked at 2" memory foam mattress toppers. for a kingsize and double £110 .
Also found a great company supplying 8m x 150cm Waterproof Heavy Duty 600 Denier Canvas Fabric with PVC Backing for £56
This will be enough to cover all the seats with plenty left over.
abandoned the battery box . it was too bulky and with a storage area at the stern it made sense to fabricate another bulkhead and separate the two

used White cladding with marine ply then metal brackets to secure the battery


battery in position will fibreglass in bulkhead

Battery will be sealed in so external terminals required to charge battery

then isolator switch , fuse box , and USB/ charger with switches for Bilge pump and lights


Lights arriving tomorrow , once installed can start closing the battery and making the compartment watertight,
also arrived foam , cut to size and Royal blue , water proof fabric for seat covers
