Ferry pricing isn't too bad in October half term to Cherbourg so seeing what cheapish break options could be had for a week away. (With 5 year old).

PistonGPT criteria to select a base;

Want to see and find a base easy to access;

-La Rochelle
-Pu Du Foy
-Bit of Brittany

La Rochelle feels like an option but it's 5 hours to Cherbourg and about 2 hours to Pu Du Foy but means seeing Bordeaux.

La Rochelle to Bordeaux is around two hours. L R to puy de fou a bit less than two so LR seems a good base.
An overnight crossing will have you into L R for lunchtime. Seems a good base to explore from what you say you want.

You could look at seafront apartment rentals in Pornichet, just south of la Baule (and in the town of la Baule itself). We’ve had some nice and affordable rentals there

Edited to add - you may want to change your topic title, this area isn’t SW France…

La Rochelle is a bit of a trek to Brittany.

Yes I did realise i'm not in the SW actually smile

Porni looks like it has a good holiday vibe to it, plenty of rentals so thats one search spot.

What's Pléneuf-Val-André Like? seems quite quaint and seasidey.

I am not envisaging the weather to be brilliant this time of year, but jumper weather in the evenings would do me.

A few years back we went to Arcachon mid-October and the weather was mid-20sC, clear blue sky.

This is the typical weather for Pornichet over the year and more detail for each month https://www.ou-et-quand.net/partir/quand/france/pa...

If the weather is poor, then it’s easy to get into Nantes for some city sightseeing.

Sightseeing was what I thought would be on the cards mostly.

Only been to normandy on the ferry before so going a bit further would be new.

Also tempted to see if I can get a cheap round of golf at a top local course too.

I don't know the north coast of Brittany at all. Further south in Brittany I can recommend Quibéron, a seaside resort with lovely beaches, lots of places to eat and close to the stones at Carnac. There's also a reasonably fast dual carriageway down to Nantes for your other destinations

Next option is Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie

It will sound nice when I say to the neighbours we've gone away too....

If you go to Nantes this place is pretty cool: https://www.lesmachines-nantes.fr/en/discover/the-...

I think I'd be looking at Ile Noirmoutier, a bit like a less commercial version of the Ile de Re

We had a very pleasant time their a couple of years ago. I love beaches backed by pine forest, a laid back vibe.

Looks it, very much looks to have the rural French coastal town vibe.

I just hope they don't blockade the bridge as we'll be knackered!

I've found a couple of places in La Baule Escoublac to Saint Nazaire.

It's 45 mins closer to Cherbourg and seems to hit the spot on pricing.

Anyone been along this stretch before? Saint Nazaire has a Uboat Pen that might be better than La Rochelle as it's accessible to walk around.
