2008 4.2 V8 blowing out huge amounts of steamy smokemoke

...but running smoothly with no apparent internal noises.
On acceleration I had great clouds of white smoke erupting from the exhaust plus some oily residue in one pipe, but had left the oil filler cap off accidentally earlier!
The AA man initially suggested piston rings but because of the smooth running then thought cylinder head gasket.
Any thoughts and suggestions of places to look at it around Essex/Cambs/Herts border?
