MX5 lane assist / steering
Discussion
tried the local dealer demo and was startled by the steering twitching as I was driving along. I realised that this was an EU enforced system but its one that I am not prepared to tolerate. So, when was the twitch first introduced - amazing though it might seem I have spoken to 3 dealers and none can tell me.
For the sake of clarity I have no problem with a visual warning though I would prefer not to have one. But I am not prepared to have anything that can move the steering. Even if it can be switched off at the start of a journey, an electronics fault could result in it activating without warning. So IMO its better if it isnt there are all.
So when was it introduced? I think the EU regs were 2024 but likely it came before that.

I think I have found the answer. It became compulsory for the 2024 sales year and cars with it started arriving in the UK mid 2023.
Apparently you have to turn it off each time you start the car. My concern is that if the system is there at all, then it could fail and suddenly start steering the car even when turned off. Anything that can go wrong will go wrong.

That's an odd thing to worry about, I've had cars with cruise control for over 15 years, I've never seen one turn itself on and start accelerating itself. ZesPak said:

You are a sample of one so hardly a fair statistic. In any case there is a bit of a difference between a car accelerating and one heading for the bushes! My ND is a 2015 with lane assist . I wondered WTF was happening when it triggered on my way back to Yorkshire from Wolverhampton, where I bought it in 2017 . It clicked what it was, so I turned it off, and it has been off ever since , with only a little yellow light reminding me of my sin.Never give it a second thought. In my daily driver, a 25 Duster , it needs turning off (along with most of the rest of the ADAS b
ks ) every trip - but at least one manual switch does so for all .

This is massively annoying me too. I got a new humura in late July and I've barely driven it because of this nonsense, you turn it all off, switch the car off for one second and it turns itself all on again.
What's the point of having an option to disable it all in the menu if it just resets everything a minute later.
You can turn off the lane assist by holding one of the buttons down but that turns off traction control as well. This is so f
king stupid, we're treated like children.

I did eventually get a reply from Mazda which read :
Thank you for contacting Mazda UK to ask about which MX-5s are fitted with the Lane-keep Assist System (LAS)
To confirm, the Lane-keep Assist System (LAS) was added the to 2024 model year MX-5. This is recognised by being the facelift model.
All models prior to this date just feature Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS) (audible warning without intervention).
The system that meddles with the steering is an EU legal requirement for all cars 2024 onwards and they dont allow it to be permanently disabled. Someone did suggest that a triangle of black plastic over where the forward looking camera is might work to disable.

Wait, did that last paragraph came from Mazda or is that something you added yourself? Thank you for contacting Mazda UK to ask about which MX-5s are fitted with the Lane-keep Assist System (LAS)

You need to sell it and get a 2023 model .What's the point of having an option to disable it all in the menu if it just resets everything a minute later.
