Ken Clark's speech
Discussion
Anyone else seen it?
I will hold my hand up and say I've been very anti-Clark (see previous posts in his threads!).
I've just seen his speech and frankly I'd now be happy for him to be Tory leader. Head screwed on and hit Labour where it hurts.
I'm sure his comments will appear in news items and can be posted up soon!

Yes, but he's too old and too pro Europe for me..
Liam Fox for leader please!
ok so you might think Liam Fox would make a good leader...but I guarantee you the public wont.
Its whoever the public perceive to be most electable...he should be voted in.
And its plainly obvious to anyone tuned in that Ken Clark is the man, followed by David Cameron.
The others including DD who is a great speaker, just dont have the charisma and media presence to even dent labours chances.
Problem with Liam Fox is that he is perceived as being a bit of an arsehole....
So my media friends tell me.

They dont want to be in power, not if it means Clark, so they would rather vote for someone else and stay in opposition, such is their spite.
Astutely put. Electing Clarke would mean having to admit that New Labour now occupy what used to be traditional Tory territory and they must take them on at the same game. They would appear to insist on pretending labour is still somehow vaguely left-wing - which means the tories have to make themselves so right-wing as to be unelectable.

Agree on the Europe angle but why too old? We will all have to work until we're 90. Churchill was about 65 in 1940 and did pretty well, not least because he'd been around long enough to see more than a few world events and lose his naivety.

Labour have shifted to previous Tory positions economically, but they can't really claim to be the working mans representatives any more.
If the Torys want to get them out, they need to attack Labour's weaknesses. The creeping legislation and intrusion in to peoples lives, cronyism and downright dishonesty.
It may well not be traditional Tory ground, but Labour made a big change and the Tories need to respond in kind.
Well, I have to say, I enjoyed it immensely. (Jeusus! I'm even sounding like 'im!)
Despite not being a fan of his party, Ken did himself proud today. He showed us all that HE, is the ONLY true old style orator and Politician left in the house and can "knock the spots off" the faceless, un-charismatic, frontmen his party has put up in his stead.
I felt that he suffered a little from selective memory loss though, but hey! Don't they all?.......At one stage though I thought I was listening to an after dinner speech by "Blaster Bates" it was so funny!...
Oh! and I'm not worried, Our Tony is as far right as any of them, so why worry?............
You with me so far Jaglover?........

ken is a handy bloke but will be too old at the next election, the factor the conservatives have in thier favour is that they have four potential new leaders who are all electable!
labour have tony and gordon and the country is rapidly getting pissed off with both of them!
the labour front bench is and always has been lacking in new talent!
grabber brown will not be tolerated for more than one term after his tonyness has claimed his place in history!
