And the 17" tyre choice is........
Discussion
I had my A110 serviced at Renault Cardiff back in March and they noted that the rear tyres (original PS4s all round) were down to 3mm after 8k miles, which I knew anyway, so I've had plenty of time to consider replacements. The fronts were still at 6mm, as the Alpine is light on the front end.
Whilst I've had no complaint with the PS4, I wanted to try something different, leaning towards a more hardcore tyre. My go to channels for tyre opinions are Jonathon Benson @ Tyre Review, Steve Sutcliffe of Autocar & Evo fame @ Tyre Seeker and Doug @ Tire Track for a Yank perspective.
JB tested the new Pirelli P Zero 5 against the Conty SC7, Potenza Sport, Michelin PS5 and Goodyear F1 Eagle, recommending any of these tyres, but was blown away by the new Pirelli. I thought I'll have a full set of those then......Oh.....only available in 18" upwards. Bugger.
Those can be binned then, along with all the others not available in 17" :- PS4 's' , Conty SC7, Vredestein Vorti, Yokohama Advan V107, Dunlop Sport Maxx GT and Potenza Sport not available in rear size.
Neither the Hankook Ventus Evo 3 or Kuhmo Ecsta PS71/72 bettered the PS5 or Eagle F1 in any reviews, so it looked like a final between the Michelin and the Goodyear. I haven't seen or read a review where the PS5 bettered the F1, other than longevity and rolling resistance. Indeed, Michelins own blurb majors primarily on tread life and they're £30 per corner more expensive. The Goodyear it is then.
Like the PS4 / PS5 or any of these tyres though, it's got a really boring tread profile. They all look the bloody same.
I started looking at semi-track tyres and discovered the Nankang NS-2R with it's sexy directional tread pattern, A rated in the rain, and around £130 per tyre. Obviously the trade off is in wear ,TW200, but I could stomach getting a year out of them at that price. Until I read owners reviews " sidewalls like concrete and deafening road noise" was the consensus. Totally at odds with the Alpine's ride.
Then I discovered the Yokohama A052. Fantastic grip, A-rated in the rain, plush sidewall comfort, sexy horizontal slat tread.....and available in 17" front and rear. Too good to be true. The wear reviews were an issue though.
And then I saw the price. Cheapest I found was Demon Tweeks, £240 per front tyre, £290 per rear. Nearly £1100 for a set of tyres that would last 12 months at best !
Hence I was at my local Kwik Fit yesterday having two new rears fitted for £126 per tyre and 10% discount........Goodyear Eagle F1s.
