The Misery Continues - A322 Speed Limit Proposal

I got a link on the BBC News Homepage today saying that a 60mph limit is being considered for the dual-carriageway section South of the M3 - basically the Lightwater by-pass - to reduce accidents.

I'm not aware of there being any accidents, but based on recent experience of these proposals it's just a matter of time.

I suppose the only good news is it's 60, not 50!

The only accident I remember from my 10 years living in Lightwater was the junction of the A322 with the Guildford Road. A chap on a motorbike died. They fixed the visibility problem some 5 years ago. Nothing since.

I’d gladly swap a lower speed limit (no matter how pointless) if they actually sorted the traffic management out on junction 3 so you could get off it. Even when the traffic is light the queue is ridiculous, coming from the Bisley direction I normally end up cutting across to Mychett and going up the A331 to the M3.

I'm aware speed makes up 29% of fatal crahes, but 50% of them are on 30mph! At this rate, we will go back to having someone waving a red flag.

Again, zero information in the statement-of-reasons.

It highlights four fatalities in the last 10 years, but two are covered above and have nothing to do with the speed limit

That seems about par for the course.

No proper reason given backed by facts, they just want to reduce limits everywhere. They may have a consultation, but regardless of the responses they'll just impose it anyway.

If you are coming via Bisley the best shortcut is via Light water to Windlesham and gets you the other side of the roundabout.

Why did you have to mention that? Now the queues in New Road, Windlesham will just get longer.

Surrey County Council issued a County wide policy document for consultation on speed limits around 18 months ago. The bottom line was the intention to reduce speed limits by 10MPH from existing limits on all roads in Surrey to reduce pollution. Very few people responded …perhaps because few knew about it…. It was not well publicised. The document focused on pollution, and road safety rather than speed. . The Policy now appears to be being implemented across the whole County. If it hasn't happened on a road near you it may well be coming. Your description of events is very similar to the reduction in Speed limit on a section of the A217 known as the ‘Mad Mile’ near Banstead, which gradually dropped from National Speed limit down to 60 and now to 40MPH. From memory the proposal was also to include 20mph ( rather than 30mph ) through some villages.

Seems silly but a great excuse to use for eco reasons I guess. No doubt the massive queues at rush hour on the M3 roundabout give no pollution at all.

I remember queuing for hours trying to join the M3 there once, I'd only just moved to Surrey at the time and decided to go back up north to see family. Nightmare.

I live elsewhere in Surrey and rarely go down the bypass now but its pretty disheartening to see another road face reduced limits. During quiet times it was a nice stretch of clear road to open the car up to the 70mph limit and definately not exceed it without causing anyone any harm.

Ive seen a couple of crashes over the years where absolute morons had somehow managed to lose control on the straight sections of road and crash into the trees (how?!), plus people hoon up that road like its the autobahn, I bet you some people travel at over 150mph on that road.

Hate living in this county at times I really do, just want to get out on an evening and enjoy driving a little and blow the depression out the window without being penalised by these s all the time, are they bored? There must be some anti motoring Karens in control here determined to reduce speed limits across the entire county to 20mph. fking miserable s.

Yes I remember that fiasco. More than 50% of respondents to the consultation wanted to keep the 60 limit but Surrey CC ignored them and reduced it to 40 anyway. Because the sanctimonious tts think they know better than the people who elected them.

Not far off the A217 Cheam village did get a stretch of 20 mph a couple of years ago, but it's part of a London Borough.

I came home from a trip to the Midlands this afternoon and took a slight detour to blat down it while it still has a 70 limit.

I may even have crept over 70 as there are no cameras yet - hopefully!

Crash map shows roughly one serious incident per year on that stretch and numerous smaller ones (pretty much like any other road. The incidents are mostly at the junctions at each end.

Both sides of the 322 closed this evening due to a “serious accident”.

Both sides closed between Red roundabout and the M3 roundabout.

Haven't found anything detailed as yet, probably as it only happened around 9PM, but the Surrey Police feed currently says they're dealing with a serious impact collision between 2 cars and the road won't be re-opened for some time due to the investigation work required.

I whizzed along it again today while I still can, then when I got home there was a report on BBC News saying the crash last night was a 2 car double fatal and one driver has been arrested for offences including driving under the influence.
