there's an epidemic of shoplifting in the Uk , Police seem to be underpowered . My wife and daughter were shopping in JD sports the other day when a 50+ male and druggie girlfriend grabbed a load of garments and walked out . the till assistant and security did nothing !!
I wasn't there but being a 50+ 200lb angry ph executive built like a brick out house with a temper would have intervened
f
k em . I worked all my life overseas in oririble countries overseas for low life scum to rob in broad daylight in sleepy Dorset
no one wants tio see anyone hurt but this scum was threatening staff
good on the guy for restraining him but he will probably do time for stepping in

There's been a thing about pharmacies being robbed in the news today. I was in a pharmacy in a very middle class part of SE London the other day and the lady serving there told me they'd been robbed 3 times that day. She said that was normal. One had just happened which is why the topic came up.
The number of people who complain when they see a number of police officers restraining a prisoner saying "it doesn't take that many, I could do it on my own"
Well this IS what can happen when people who aren't trained in safe restraint and issues such as positional asphyxiation have a go

Pretty sure if you assault staff that's Robbery, not shoplifting.
Disgusting that the guy protecting the other shoppers has been arrested (process being used as punishment) however if there no missing information from the report I can't imagine any jury convicting.
Of course, if he doesn't get legal aid he'll lose his house defending himself.

Easy answer - don't go thieving !!!! Zero sympathy for those that do .Well this IS what can happen when people who aren't trained in safe restraint and issues such as positional asphyxiation have a go
Similar thing happened a few years ago not too far from where I live, security guard tackled a shoplifter...

The last time i read about police officers trying to detain a suspect (airport) they got well and truly bloodied.
How does one determine proportionate ?
2015 northern Iraq ISISHow does one determine proportionate ?
we had a young Iraqi lad working with us from Basra who would on weekends go and supported the local Iraqi forces fighting ISIS in the north He came back excited & showed me pictures of video nasties . An ISLIL Guy in his 20s crucified on the bonnet of a Landcruiser very graphic next picture was our lad in his Khakis with an AK47 standing next to the body
I asked what happened . He said these people ISIS have no honour if they come to Basra they will rape torture and kill our families so we are barbaric and take no prisoners
Proportionate
Hell yes
So a vigilante intervening with scum who rob shops I have no sympathy
but I would have put him in an hand lock restrained him possibly the recovery position and not put him in a fatal choke hold
be safe out there
And yet Thames Valley PCC says that other shoppers who fail to intervene and challenge shoplifters are part of the problem.
Sorry but as commented previously having seen a set walk out of Tesco with an overflowing trolley and loading it into their itinerant tree surgeon Transit, with the security oguy specifically paid by the store shrugging at events. Then no chance.
Thames Valley PCC is shouting at clouds and will regret it when an intervening customer suffers injury or worse. Idiot.

Well the good thing there is that the guard was not prosecuted. So there's precedent! https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-wiltshire-39...
Problem here is that 2tier will get involved and likes to "send a message"

A pharmacy I can at least understand as it would be easy for the scrotes to resell. I was in Hobby Craft recently and the cashier was struggling to remove the tag on a model kit, I commented it seemed a bit pointless but apparently they get stolen all the time. Maybe I'm sheltered but I didn't think there was a thriving black market for Airfix kits.Although in this particular incidence, it can't help but strike me as a tragic, pointless waste. Just think of the produce that would have been spoiled in the scuffle.

We perhaps ought to consider whether criminals are afforded too many protections.
I'm happy for crims to have all their current legal protections. But given there's no budget to deal with many crimes (shoplifting being one of them) couldn't "they" just say "In the same way that we don't prosecute shoplifters we can't afford to prosecute people defending shopworkers from attack, although the law remains in place."
