We have a 3m x 4 m patio that the OH would like to be able to put some shade or rain protection over. It has the conservatory at the back, the house with breeze block and render on the left and a window and our fence on the right, straight ahead is the grass.

She has considered everything from running some lines from the house to the fence and making a sort of horizontal roman blind mechanism, but this comes with tension issues for the lines and it is a bit heath robinson.

Another option is a pergola of some sort, but I don't think bolting through the patio is going to be a go and I suspect they have to be anchored down.

The other idea is to get an awing and bolt it into the house on the left, but the house is rendered and when I have drilled into it in the past the breeze block is soft and the awning would go right above the window. I'm concerned about the softness of the block, damaging the render and whether I'll hit some sort of RSJ / lintel or similar above the window.

Anyone done anything similar?

I've used these people to buy two sails for temp cover over the outside of the conservatory. Dropped the temp significantly and seem good quality

Either 1 or 2 brolleys depending on how much shade you want.

We had the same breeze block/render problem and ended up going with a freestanding pergola instead of fixing into the wall. You can get aluminium ones with weighted feet or planters on the base, so no need to drill through the patio. That way you can still run a retractable canopy or waterproof cover without worrying about damaging the wall or hitting a lintel

We bought our 4m x 3m electric awning from intelroll.co.uk.

Good quality, very pleased with it.

Ours is mounted on the 4th and 5th course of bricks above the lintel of our patio doors, so no worries about hitting an RSJ. I fitted it myself (with help). The anchors are very beefy. You can use resin as well, but going into brick was fine for our use case.

The one we bought has built in LED lights which we use a lot, but I’m not sure they still offer that option. Our model is INT500 full cassette.

Something like this with the sand and water base if you are worried about out the walls being able to take the load ?

This is what we use. Not only does it raise but it also tips to the side. We don’t raise it in strong winds but it’s been perfect for us.

Sounds just the ticket, any recommendations?
