Hi

Pondering about putting up a 5/6 bay timber frame garage (or something along those lines). Thinking wooden sides and back with an open front.

Anyone done something similar? Quick look on the net offers various kits - anyone used one? Wonder how much more expensive a kit is than getting wood from the timber yard.

Cheers

At our previous place, we were top of a hill in the sticks and had no car cover. Felt this could be remedied given I had some space around the house itself so went hunting for a timber kit supplier.

In terms of who we used, it was Benfield

We started with one of their 'standard' layouts for a 3 bay garage, and then tweaked it. We added a log store the full width at the back of the garage by extending the eaves. We had an office above, and external staircase for access.

The only issue appeared when we asked for the bay sizes to be scaled up a little to allow cars to be in the bays and doors opened for access / egress, rather than pull the cars out and then people get in / out. With the weather where we were and winter, we'd rather be using the dry space in the garage. The doors were 2 part split stable doors. The problem came when they didn't scale the doors to suit the new opening / bay sizes. And given it was a kit, delivered in the dark in November to Scotland, I didn't spot the doors were too small until months down the line and they got to holding the doors up to the holes and they were saloon door style. The supplier were having nothing of it, so I had a local firm make some suitable doors at my cost. Wasn't worth the battle in the end.

Used a local contractor to do the groundworks and foundations, and a different joiner do the build itself. He complained some of the fit of the pieces left much to be desired, but he fixed it. Then our local Building Standards wanted some specific conditions met which were daft - like drainage from the roof had to tie into a system......in a field....so I connected to my field drains. Then vermin control on the end of the rafters external - that was chicken wire stapled to the ends. Then it was fireproofing - so I intumescent varnished the office, but the fireboard (2 layers) between the garage spaces and the office were fine except for the request for plastering of it. I told the BS guy where to go then as the garage was semi-agricultural and was not entirely weather tight so plaster would last 1 winter before it fell off. Wasn't worth it!
