I know nothing about cars and engines. And looking around the internet, I’m seeing a lot of people say this engine isn’t great and will give problems later on. Should I avoid it? It’s a nice car and a good deal, but if it’s a bad engine, I’ll walk away.

Just avoid any that have been taxis. And most diesel Octavia’s online for sale seem to have been! I know, as I spent a long time looking for one for my wife.

Run a vcheck background paid check on it. It'll help to show if its been run as a taxi.

Look at the rear nearside seat condition, how each door opens. 90% of the journeys do you often fill the rear of your seats? Doors should be slightly stiffer to open through lack of use- look for scuffing on tje rear door entry paintwork etc

We have a number of them at work as pool vehicles and they are utterly uninspiring and joyless to both drive and spend time in.

Great MPG!

I know they are not meant to set the world on fire but I was expecting something just a little bit more from them especially as I'd considered the VRS and Scout in the past.

Are they reliable long term?
