Audi TT 8N 3.2 Quattro

Morning all,

The more regular readers of the forums will know this car already as I purchased it off of PH luminary, RS Grant (link to his readers car post https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&... )

We had talked back and forth for a while about buying it, mainly Grant telling me how good I'd look in another TT after I got shot of my 8N 225 Bam during the dark days of lockdown. Cue some marketplace trawling on Sunday, not having much luck when my partner suggested going to see the TT, safe to say I didn't need much convincing.

It's in need of some bodywork being sorted, front wings, sills and a dent on the roof. However besides that, it's come up OK after a quick polish! It'll be getting a full service just for peace of mind, however besides an ABS error blaring on the dash, it drove perfect after collecting it. The colour combo between the merlin purple & white/cream(?) interior is just the best, and was one of the biggest selling points for me.

I'll try to keep this post updated when I've done the work to the car, for now anyway here are some photos of the car as it stands.

A lunch break spent putting a list together of what needs done...

Visual -

1. Sills
2. Front wings
3. Wheels powder coated (Thinking of staying silver, as it suits the purple nicely)
4. Dent in roof (most likely a next year job when funds allow)
5. Full detail & ceramic coat

Mechanical -

1. ABS Fault
2. EML showing on dash
3. Fuel level on dash cluster only showing between 3/4 & full.
4. New tyres all round, current ones are 6 years old.
5. Squeak on full lock (Must be a common thing, my other 8N done this too)
6. Service

Mmm merlin purple - great colour considering the German's fondness of a conservative colour palette.

Small victory this afternoon, started to dig into the ABS issue and found one of the 40amp mega fuses has blown.



Also had it plugged into Autel, before the fuse was replaced it had 2 sides of A4 of faults. EML now gone, Mondays job will be to figure out what is causing the ABS fault.

Usually a rear wheel speed sensor on the MK1 TT that causes the ABS light to come on. Easy fix if it is.

I had a Merlin purple S3 years ago. Bought new in 2002.

New 40amp fuse fitted, ordered on Friday afternoon, delivered via FedEx on Saturday morning!

TT is on the ramp just now, time to sort this ABS issue.

This being the oldest car I have owned (and very much a learning experience) my stomach sank when it was raised up and revealed the rust, however a quick reminder that this car is older than our apprentice by 3 years and were back on track with getting it serviced.

New ABS module required... £65.00 w/ eBay assured fit. Should be arriving tomorrow, will get it fitted and report back (with hopefully no screaming ABS fault on the dashboard!)

More things to add to the list as well -

1. OSF & NSF wishbone rear bush
2. Strip & clean front brakes as there binding slightly
3. OSF outer CV boot
4. OSR & NSR trailing arm front bush

ABS module fitted and issue is fixed! Steering angle sensor getting sorted tomorrow with vcds, another thing on the list ticked off.

Ladies & gents, we have sorted the electrical and mechanical issues! (For now…) Steering angle sensor still to be sorted through VCDS but that also gives me an excuse to grab a coffee with my friend at the same time.

Taxed and insured, wheel alignment tomorrow morning then a run up the Scottish glens.

All in all it required:

1. New battery
2. CV boot
3. 2 rear bushes
4. 2 front bushes
5. Front brakes stripped and cleaned
6. ABS module
7. 4 Tyres

A quick wash to get the majority of the workshop grime and crud off, then off too the body shop next week all going well.

So I couldn't wait until tomorrow, so myself, the Mrs and the dug went for a drive on the back roads not far from the house to grab some beauty shots...

Considering I'd class this a "15 footer" as it stands, it's certainly a very, very pretty car.
