We have FTTP which was installed a while ago and as part of that we ditched our landline.

If I buy a voip phone to the router what number does it use? Or is it effectively set up as an extension of my mobile?

Your question is unclear.

If you buy a voip service and handsets you will have a dedicated number separate from your mobile.

If you refer to a service provided by your isp then it might be the same as your previous land line number.

But that might not answer your question.

I was randomly browsing Amazon and came across a standalone BT VOIP phone which didn’t say anything about needing a separate call plan, it just said attach it to your router.

This one to be exact https://www.amazon.co.uk/Essential-Digital-Phone-C...

You'll need a VOIP provider (unless your broadband supplier also offers VOIP - not all do). Your VOIP phone won't work unless you have a service (and server) to log your phone into. I can't recommend one (provider) as I'm much less than impressed with the one I selected.

I've been on VOIP for about 5 years or so (maybe longer - can't remember). I had to 'contract' with a VOIP provider and I could bring my 'old' landline number across with me. I'm with www.Miso-comms.net (happy customer - no other connection) and they've been great for my needs. I have an Analogue Telephone Adaptor (ATA) that plugs into my internet and then my DECT handset plugs into that. The ATA is configured with my VOIP account details and I also have a 'soft phone' app on my mobile phone so I can make and receive calls on my 'landline' from anywhere I can get an internet connection (ie 3/4/5G or WiFi). My ATA is a Grandstream HT801 or HT802 (801 has 1 phone line, 802 has 2 phone lines but I only use the one).

Just checked - been on VOIP since autumn 2018!

You need to buy a new cloud telephony service and a suitable handset to use with it.

Pricing for home users is a bit wild west as providers know that people wishing to maintain a home landline aren't particularly price-sensitive.

I have no connection with this company nor have I ever used them but I recall other PHers recommending them when this question has come up previously.

Or you forego a landline and use a mobile for all your calls.

The bt phone will only work with bt you would need different devices for other isp s

As said you can look at Andrews & Arnold some have found them good some find them a tad difficult to deal with

Do you actually need a VOIP service ? I thought people just use mobiles these days.

We use our mobiles and WiFi calling so don’t need one, I was curious how they worked.
